Flu Facts: What to do if you catch the flu

By Sun Advocate

You may have heard everyone at school talking about this year’s flu season, but you might not give it another thought unless you actually get the flu. If you do get sick knowing what to do can help you feel better faster.
• Drink lots of fluids.
• Get lots of sleep and take it easy, this is a great time to chill with your favorite DVD’s.
• Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve your fever and achiness, over the counter cold or cough medicines may also relieve some flu symptoms.
• Wear layers, you might be cold one minute and hot the next, and wearing several layers makes it easy to add or subtract clothes as needed.
• Wash you hands frequently, you don’t want to spread the flu to everyone else, if you can help it. Also don’t share cups and eating utensils until you are better.
While it’s true that many teens don’t need flu shots because your bodies can handle the infections without developing other problems, there are a few that should have the shot. If you have certain medical disorders like diabetes or a lung disorder like asthma most doctors will recommend you get the flu shot.
The best time to get a flu shot in the United States is in October or November. This will give you a chance to build up immunity before the winter flu season. However, you can get a flu shot throughout flu season and still have some protection against the flu. You can also protect yourself against the flu by washing your hands frequently.
