The Castle Valley Community Theatre group is in the final preparations for their fall production of Godspell. The performances of the play are to take place tonight (Nov. 9), Nov. 10, 11 and 13 and then again on Nov. 16, 17, 18 and 20 in the Price Civic Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
This noteworthy musical, written by John-Michael Tebelak with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and co-directed by Gail Scoville and Jim Thompson, essentially tells both the parables and beatitudes of Christ, as well as the Passion story told in the New Testament book of Matthew, incorporating such scenes as the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemene, and the Crucifixion.
“The musical is more than simply a Sunday school lesson in the teachings of Christ,” said Scoville. “It is also a look at how a community of faith was built throughout the Christian world and the importance of the same.”
Thompson says it is not at all serious musical either.
“This is not your old fashioned gospel lesson format, for the playgoer is treated to a sometimes lighthearted, often deeply religious series of scenes and musical numbers intend to enrich their faith and understanding of the scriptures.”
Originally produced in the 1970’s, the script used by the CVCT production has been updated to reflect today’s times and temperament.
“Gone is the clownish atmosphere of the ’70’s production, but not the humor and style that is it’s trademark,” said Thompson. “Here is a production designed for the whole family, with a concerted attempt to incorporate the viewpoints of all our community’s Christian heritages. To that end the cast and crew reflect that diversity and richness.”
