It is a sure sign that high school sports are making the transition from fall to winter when the swim team takes to the water. The Carbon swim team is off to a great start on their season with the girls taking a 139-79 win over Delta on Oct. 19.
The Carbon girls were led by first place finishes by sophomore Erica Perkins in the 500 free; Megan Garff in the 100 fly; Isabel Durach in the 100 breaststroke and April Sorenson in the 200 IM.
Perkins also took 2nd in the 200 while Garff was 2nd in the 100 breaststroke. Durach added a 3rd place finish in the 500 free and Sorensen took a 5th place finish in the 11 free. Leading the way for the freshman was Chrissy Cox who took a 2nd in the 100 fly and 4th in the100 back.
Other swimmers who placed in the top three included Amanda Baum, 2nd in 100 free and 100 back; Ali Baum, 3rd in the 50 free and 100 back; Kelsey Gillespie, 3rd in the 50 free; Jaimie Scoville , 3rd in the 100 breaststroke; and Jessica Hardy with a 3rd in the 100 back.
Coach Phyllis Cox gave credit to all the team, not just the top swimmers. She stated that all had contributed to the win.
The Carbon boys were not as fortunate. With an under staffed squad they just didn’t have the depth to add on enough points to beat Delta. They lost 127-105. Leo Yu led the way for the boys with a 1st place finish in the 100 back and a 2nd place finish in the 200 IM. Thomas Peterson had a good meet with a first in the 100 fly and a 3rd in the 100 breaststroke.
Other top finishers included Terrance Henrie with a 2nd in the 200 free and 3rd in the 500 free; Ryan Slane, 2nd in the 500 free and 5th in the 200 IM; Justin Maryboy placing third in both the 200 and 100 free; and Randy Slane with a 3rd in the 100 fly and 4th in the breaststroke.
“Two or three more boys at the meet would have pushed us over the top. We were missing quite a few of our men swimmers at the meet,” she summed up. “The coaches are excited about the performances of those who swam and hope to see the rest of the swimmers attending the next meet.”
