Letter to the Editor: Not into decadence

By Sun Advocate

Editor;
Recently I took a drive coming from Vernal following Highway 191 coming down through Willow Creek Canyon. I stopped at the Castle Gate Cemetery.
A young man earning his Eagle Badge had built a register box with some paper inside. Very nice, but it is in need of some sanding and some deck varnish.
I am writing in hopes the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and the Carbon County Historical Society along with Price and Helper and many residents living in the area that have decedents buried there will help do something about the cemetery in general.
At present the outside fence needs to be straightened and tightened. Weeds, bunch grass and brush needs to be removed. This in itself could be made into three Eagle Scout projects. I might suggest that the community could make it a Castle Gate Cemetery Cleanup Re-Union Day. Everyone should be invited.
I would also suggest a hole be dug in between the cedar post that have reached the age of disrepair and that volunteers should fill the holes with post cement and then set in five foot steel posts using 1″ concrete re enforcement rods welded to the steel posts.
Also just above the decorative steel fencing stainless steel tie wire should be used to tie the fence to the steel posts and to the reinforcement top rod. The concrete one inch re enforcement rods would replace the rotting 2 X 4’s that are there now. This process would require some welding.
The gate at the cemetery should be no wider than two feet wide. And a strip fence in front of the gate should be installed. This would not allow two wheelers, horses or cows to enter.
The repair list there could go on and on.
I also suggest a metal box with slot cut into the top which could be used for people who have knowledge of people buried there to put notes in concerning those persons. From time to time the Historical Society could collect and record that info.
The people buried in that cemetery should not be forgotten and their final resting place be allowed to go into decadence.
