Coming off a 48-0 victory over Millard, the Mont Harmon Junior High football team was ready to take on San Rafael on August 30.
And the string of wins continued as the pirates sent the Bulldogs back to the doghouse with a 46-0 shutout.
But as good as the team has looked, things haven’t been very rosy. Coach Tim Tiller wasn’t sure how his team would do this season. He lost several key players to injuries before the season started. To add to the trouble, eligibility issues took out several other players.
As a result, the experience he was looking forward to melted away and many young seventh and eighth graders had to quickly step up and fill the void.
Focusing on fundamentals and execution for the young team has paid off big.
During Wednesdays game the defense only gave up eight yards of offense to their opponents for the entire game.
On the other side of the line the Pirate offense had 490 total yards of forward movement.
Tiller put in his seventh grade quarterback in the second half and the team still added three more touchdowns to the score.
Tiller is amazed by what the young squad has pulled off so far.
“It is a total team effort” he observed, “if it wasn’t for the boys acting as a team, we wouldn’t be winning like we are today.”
In other in Castle Valley football action, Helper took Canyonview in to overtime and beat the Cougars 26-20.
In volleyball Helper beat Canyonview in four games and Pinnacle Canyon defeated Helper’s JV volleyball squad 25-8, 25-6 and 16-14 to take that contest.
