Two local baseball players have signed contracts with major league teams.
Brady Martinez, Price, signed as a free agent with the New York Yankee’s organization. Travis Barnett, Castle Dale, was chosen on the first day of the draft at pick number 409 by Tampa Bay.
Barnett was playing for Salt Lake Community College as a junior this year. He had returned from two years on a mission.
Martinez was playing for Arizona State University in his junior year. He had also returned from serving his mission.
Both players are pitchers for their respective teams. Barnett was considered one of the best closers for the SLCC in his freshman year.
Martinez, who had played his first two years of college ball at the University of Utah after graduating from Carbon High was 4-0 this season with a 4.46 ERA. He led the Sun Devils in appearances with 32 games this year.
Martinez was at the airport Monday morning waiting for his flight to Tampa, for two weeks of instructional league before heading to either Staten Island, or the Gulf Coast League.
He expressed a bit of surprise at being signed by the Yankees, but said he knew he would end up somewhere in this year’s draft.
