What is the war in Iraq costing our country?
The United States has lost over 2300 servicemen and women and 16,000 have sustained injuries. The Iraqi people have suffered over 30,000 deaths and an untold number of injured.
Since March 2003, the U.S. has spent $233.6 billion and still counting on this preempted war. Consider that this sum would fully fund the world anti-hunger efforts for nine years or ensure every child in the world basic immunizations for 77 years, or pay for 31 million to attend Head Start, or provide 1 1 .3 million students with four year scholarships at public universities.
Responsible policy experts recognize that most Iraqis want the U.S. occupation to end. At the same time, many believe the U.S. presence actually fuels efforts to recruit volunteers among the Iraqis for insurgents to continue the violence.
What a sad situation we find our beloved country in at this time. The sooner we leave, the better.
