A trip into Salt Lake always makes me appreciate what we have here in Carbon County.
Yeah, I know we don’t have the shopping opportunities and big malls that are in the city. But what we do have is a great sense of community and the ability to slow down and feel at home no matter where we are in the community.
As I drove into Salt Lake on Friday morning, I hit the rush hour traffic crawl. Going 25 miles an hour, I fiddled with my radio, finished the last of my cold coffee, dusted off my dashboard and used my shirtsleeve to clean off the little fingerprints on the inside of my windshield.
Then I was bored. So I began looking around and I noticed that the traffic going south was as heavy and slow as the traffic going north. Why, I wondered. Seems like there are as many nice houses in the north and good jobs in the south as the other way around.
So, by living here, I don’t get the 45 minute, scream at traffic commute every day.
But we all make choices. Mine is to commute with my coffee to my computer. It has its down side as well. I have lost many a thought while being interrupted by someone screaming “Gramma!” at the top of their lungs. Even when you are trying to ignore them, you at least have to look up to make sure there is no blood or banned items connected with the scream.
I also like the fact that a trip to anywhere in the area is a short drive. I used to grouse when I lived in Wellington because all my kids’ friends moved to Helper and I had to drive 20 minutes to take them.
Actually when I was mad at them for something I could make it in 10 minutes to go pick them up.
For some the pace of this town may not be adequate. I am told we have a lot of trouble convincing top professional people to move here because of the lack of amenities. Lack of shopping, theater, arts and activities are some of the complaints.
We actually have all of the above, just at a different level than the city.
I say enjoy what we have. Embrace the opportunities. If you need a dose of the metro life, it is only a blink away.
I am glad to be back home.
