Carbon High Dino boys finish first, girls place third at track meet

Carbon hurdlers fight to stay ahead of Tooele. Travis Hepworth, Brett Wells, Amie Steward and Allie Steward all placed in hurdle events.

The Carbon Dinos’ track team hosted a 10-team state qualifying meet at the high school track April 8.
The boys took first place as a team in the meet. The girls placed a respectable third as a team in the meet.
Samantha Smith and Paul Goodrich set the tone in the first event of the meet.
Smith ran the 3,200 event for the first time and the ninth grader held her own in the race and forced the race down to the wire. She was edged out in a photo finish by .01 seconds to take second place.
Paul Goodrich followed with his own second place finish in the 3,200 as well.
Brandon Wilson flew around the track to capture first in the 100- and 200-meter events.
Jacob Perez took a victory in the 400-meter sprint with a time of 53.79.
Elizabeth Smith took first place in the 1,600-meter event with sister, Samantha, right on her heels for second place. Elizabeth placed second in another photo finish, losing by .01 seconds in the 800-meter run.
Willie Woodruff was able to place fourth in the 400-meter sprint and sixth in the 200-meter sprint.
Travis Hepworth took a second place finish as well in the 33-meter hurdles and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Brett Wells placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Brittany Banning took home first in the 100-meter finals and also had a sixth place finish in the 200-meter run.
Amie Steward took third in the 300-meter hurdles and earned a fourth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
Allie Steward followed with a fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
In the field events, Kyle Leonard won the long jump and placed second in the high jump.
Amie Steward placed first in the long jump, while Allie Steward took second in the high jump.
Brittany Banning earned third place in the high jump.
Karlee Martino took fourth in the long jump.
Levi Branch threw for fourth place in the discus and James McKendrick chucked the javelin for a fourth place finish.
Travis Hepworth and Kyle Assay placed third and fourth respectively in the high jump.
The Carbon High track coach was pleased with his team. He felt like the entire boys’ team contributed to the first place finish at the meet.
The coach is also excited about the efforts of ninth graders, Samantha and Elizabeth Smith, who are giving gutsy performances each time they run.
The Dino track team will travel Tuesday to meet Juan Diego in a dual meet.
The junior varsity squad also has had some success as the members attended a meet at Granite on April 4.
James McKendrick tried his luck in the mile run for the first time and finished first. He also took first in the javelin.
Jared Richens had a first place finish in the 800-meter run.
Kent Olsen placed second in the 3200- and 1600-distance events.
Travis Wilson won a first place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
Carl Bergren took second.
Hepworth took second in the high hurdles and Brett Wells placed third.
Samantha Smith continued to shine with a first place finish.
Karlee Martino was first in the 100- and 200-meter events as well as the long jump.
April Milano looked good as she finished a strong third in the 200-meter run.
Rebecca Runnel and Cassandra Cunningham both improved their times and placed in the top six.
