Carbon High Track is literally off and running. The team traveled to Richfield along with eight other teams for a warm-up meet. Most teams had only been working out for about two weeks, so no one knew what to expect from their own teams nor any of the others.
Paul Goodrich led the boys team by placing first in the 3,200-meter run. He led the entire race leaving his closest competitor over 200 meters behind. Goodrich also placed third in the 1,600-meter event.
Brandon Wilson took first in the sprints with an impressive time of 23.36 seconds. Kyle Leonard placed third in the long jump with a leap of 19-10 and 1/2.
Chris Henry placed third and James McKendrick placed fifth in the throwing events. Henry’s throw was a personal best of 144-11.
The girls also had a good showing. Elizabeth Smith took third in the 3,200-meter and 800-meter runs. Paige Morley finished a close fifth in the 3,200-meter event. Amie Steward took home a second place finish in the girl’s high hurdles, third in long jump, and fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles.
The team competed in the Farm Bureau invitational track meet on a soggy Saturday morning. Weather conditions forced a number of expected teams to pull out of the event. Twelve teams were able to participate in the event.

Goodrich again placed first in the 3,200-meter run. This time the race was much closer until the final 800-meters when Goodrich broke from the field with a final burst. He made his final lap in 64 seconds to run away from his closest rival from Tooele. Wilson placed second in the 200-meter sprint.
Leonard place first in the long jump and with that jump he qualified for the state meet in that event. Also for the boys, Henry placed fourth in the javelin and Levi Branch placed fifth in the shot put and eighth in the discus.
Danielle Martino took first in the high jump. Her effort also qualified her for a spot at the state meet. Brittani Banning placed second in the 100-meter sprint, fifth in the long jump and high jumps events.
Amie Steward placed fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles followed by her sister Allie Steward in sixth. Smith had a strong showing in the 3,200-meter run with a sixth place finish.
Both teams placed in the middle of the field. The boys finished fifth of 12 and the girls placed sixth out of 12.
The coach is still trying to recruit students to come out for the team. He hopes recruiting efforts may bolster the team’s performance at future meets.
