It may seem unusual to many people, but the Carbon County area seems to be producing students with excellent scientific minds year after year.
Take this years regional science fair awards in Cedar City. Carbon students captured eight of the 10 top spots at the fair and now will go on to judging for international consideration.
First place winners from the Carbon area included four junior high students and four from Carbon High.
Those from the junior high included Kate Kilbourne, Kaz Cook, Stephanie Cha and MeLisa King.
The winners from Carbon High were Joshua Cha, Nicole Hovata, Scott Potter and Myles Houghton.
Only four students from the entire fair were selected to go on to the international competition and two of those, Potter and Hovata, are from Carbon High.
Mont Harmon was presented with the traveling trophy for the school with the most points. The school will keep and display this trophy until next year when it will be up for grabs again.
“We are very proud of these students and what they have accomplished,” said Terry Bikakis, a science teacher at Mont Harmon Junior High.
The regional science fair is broken up into two groups; the junior divison and senior divison.

In addition, a number of Carbon County students got special awards for their work and projects. In the junior division Kelcee Gilson of Mont Harmon received the American Pscychological Award, Emily Hunt of Mont Harmon got the American Meteorological Award, the U.S. Navy/Marine Corp. Award went to Toby Prettyman and Shaylee Donathan both of Mont Harmon, the National Park Service Award when to Andrea Norris of Mont Harmon and the Discovery Channel Awards went to Kelcee Gilson, Emily Hunt and Toby Prettyman all of Mont Harmon.
In the senior division special awards went to Cameron Dadgari from Carbon High who received the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Award, Cal Samuelson, Kyle Hicken and Loren Norton of Mont Harmon who garnered the U.S. Air Force Awards and Kate Kilbourne (Mont Harmon), Nicole Hovat, Kaitlyn Anderson, Nick Christensen, Heather Bird, Venyce Martinez, Trisha Munns and Myles Houghton, all of Carbon High got the U.S. Navy Award.
Other special awards in the senior division went to Venyce Martinez and Trisha Munns (both from Carbon) who received the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Award, Brittney Jepson of Mont Harmon who got the U.S. Metric Association Award and the U.S. Navy/Marine Corp. Awards that went to Teresa Quintana and Cameron Dadgari of Carbon and Jed Prettyman, Logan Banning and Jenifer Douros from Mont Harmon.
Two Carbon High students, Joshua Cha and Cameron Dadgari, received the Water Environmental Federation Awards. The National Park Service Award went to Nicole Hovat of Carbon High and MeLisa King of Mont Harmon.
Cameron Sherman of Mont Harmon was given the Scientific America Award, while Cal Samuelson of Mont Harmon received the National Teachers Mathematics Award. The Southern Utah University Geology Club Award went to Nicole Hovat of Carbon High.
Four students received the Nature High Summer Camp Awards. Those students included Faith Martinez from Mont Harmon and three Carbon High students, Nick Christianson, Nicole Hovat and Teresa Quintana.
