Revenge is sweet.
In a game where no one expected the Lady Dinos to win, the unexpected happened. It has been that kind of season for the Carbon girls. They have been hard to predict. Even the coach is not sure which team will be on the floor on a given night. But on Thursday night it was the good one, and not the evil twin as the girls in blue and white took out the powerful Lady Spartans 53-47 on the Emery teams own floor.
Carbon came out with much more intensity that in the previous meeting of the two rivals. Both teams began the game with a good offensive effort. By the end of the first quarter Emery held a slight three point edge. The Dinos slowed the tempo of play and that seemed to help them match up better with the Spartan offense.
Coach Bruce Bean has been telling his team all year that it is their defense that is the key to winning games. The girls took that lesson to heart and stepped up their defense holding the Spartans to eight in the second quarter. At the end of the half Carbon had stolen the lead by a mere one point.
The Lady Dinos never looked back. They continued to show a strong defensive effort in the second half of play.Their confidence grew as they kept the Spartans under control. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was three in Carbon’s favor. But the game still could have gone either way.
In the fourth the Dinos outscored the Spartans by three to finish off with a six point victory. The final score left the Spartans stunned and the Dinos ecstatic.
“If anyone would have told me that I would have had two freshman and a sophomore on the floor at the end of a game we won, it would have surprised me,” stated Bean,” But they were the ones who stepped up and showed me they were ready to play.”
Even though they didn’t stop Camille Fehlberg (the second highest scorer in 3A play averaging just under 15 points per game) from putting up 19 points, Carbon was able to hold the Spartans well below their scoring average.
Emery has been leading all 3A teams by averaging 54 points per game against opponents. Carbon, on the other hand has only been averaging 43 points against their foes.
The Dinos countered Emery’s power with a balance scoring attack. Tabby Cummins spearheaded the scoring with 12. Megan Garvin and Julia Potts hit 10 apiece to add to the total. Garvin and Cummins hit two long balls each. Potts also stuck one from beyond the arc.
Because they are in second place in the region, they will play Judge Memorial (14-7) at home on Friday night at 7 p.m.
