Last year Carbon High won the state girls volleyball title due to a lot of players, and one of those players was Monica Shorts.
This year Shorts played her volleyball for Westminster College of Salt Lake. And she found herself, as a freshman, right in the thick of the Frontier Conference race.
While many freshman players in all sports languish on the bench during their first year, Shorts has been proving herself by being on the court most of the time. During the past volleyball season she was nominated for the conference setter of the week five times and was named to that spot twice.
That is quite an achievement considering there are 11 weeks of play and eight teams in the conference.
On Sept. 11 Shorts broke the Westminster College record for assists per match with 51. Then on Oct. 14 she broke that record, by registering 53 assists. And then on Nov. 5 she set a new record at 60, a game in which her team won the regular conference championship.
Finally, on Nov. 12 her team beat Carroll College to win the conference tournament. Following true to the form of her team that put out an outstanding effort, Shorts tied her previously set record during that game to help secure the victory.
Because of the conference record and tournament the Lady Griffins then were able to host a regional tournament which included teams from Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Montana. Westminster placed fifth in that round of playoffs.
For her efforts this year Shorts was named to the Frontier Conferences all freshman team and was also named as an honorable mention all conference player.
