The Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in an alleged vandalism incident on Tabby Mountain.
According to trust lands administration, the incident occurred at the McDonald Basin gate located near Red Creek Road in Duchesne County.
Logging equipment was also reportedly vandalized in connection with the incident.
The equipment is owned by a local operator working on a timber harvest in McDonald Basin.
The gate was installed for the purpose of restricting high profile vehicles while allowing use of all-terrain vehicles within the area, pointed out SILTA.
Preserving public safety and concern about road degradation during the course of conducting timber sales was the major reason for the decision to install the gate on the school trust lands, explained the state agency.
Access to the public will be closed while repairs are made to the gate, continued the state agency.
A similar act of vandalism could ruin access to the area for hunters, recreational users and others who have traditionally been granted admittance, indicated SILTA.
The money earned by commercial uses on trust lands goes to the Utah schools permanent fund.
Inversely, the cost of repairing vandalism on trust lands comes out of the pockets of schools, note the state agency.
Carbon County residents with information regarding the matter are encouraged to contact the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office at 435-738-2015.
The administration manages more than 3.4 million acres of trust lands for the financial interests of Utah’s public schools and 11 additional beneficiaries.
