Jerry Pilling

MOAB – Jerry Dowd Pilling passed away peacefully at her home on Nov. 3, 2005.
Jerry was 73 years old and was born in Latuda, to Joe and Lena Dowd. She grew up in the coal mining camp of Latuda in Spring Canyon. She attended elementary school in Latuda and was bused to Helper for her junior high years. The family then moved to Price, where she attended high school and grauated in 1950.
She then went to work for Pilling’s Modern Dairy where she met the love of her life, Dan Pilling. The were married on April 24, 1951 in Las Vegas, Nev., and made Price their home while Dan served in the Korean War. They started their family in 1953 and were married in the Manti LDS Temple in 1961. They eventually made their way to Moab in 1963.
She worked for many years as the secretary at Grand County Middle School, where she was loved by everyone. After retirement, she enjoyed many more years with her husband, family and friends.
Jerry was an active member of Valley Voices for many years and loved every minute of it. She was also very active in the Grand County Democratic Party through the years – she served as chair, vice chair, and secretary. She also organized and served as president of the Democratic Women’s Group as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Jerry was most proud of her recent trip to Ireland with her two “other sisters” Lavarre Hibl and Shirley Shelton. She had too many hobbies to count; she would try anything once, but will always be remembered for her embroidery.
She was always full of life and tackled everything she did with more spunk and energy that you can imagine. She was passionate about following the Lord and truly believed each of us should try to be our best and live life to its fullest, while understanding that everything is really in God’s hands.
She is survived by children, Dan (Norrella) Pilling, Cheryl (Royce) Axtel, Julie (Gary) McKinnon, K.C. Pilling, Joey (Scott) Allred; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Joe (Marge) Dowd Jr.; Lorraine (Arnold) Grundvig, Ted (Janice) Dowd, Helen (Bob) Mitten, Mike (Martha) Dowd, Dale (Dorothy) Pilling, Merlene Anderson and Doug (Carol) Pilling. Numerous nieces and nephews, along with many she adopted as family, also survive her. Her husband, Dan Pilling; grandson, Justin Holland; parents; son-in-lw, Gregg Holland; sister-in-law, Kathryn Foster; brothers-in-law, John Seneschal and Ken Anderson preceded her in death.
As she said many times, her children were her and Dan’s finest accomplishments. We love you and we’ll miss you greatly, Mom.
