A reflection on Mr. Sharp’s letter to the editor (Sun Advocate, Sept. 27,2005).
I applaud Governor Huntsman and the Utah Board of Education on the decision not to allow the teaching of intelligent design in our public schools. Using the term “intelligent design”, appears to be a “sneaky” or covert way to teach religion in our school system. This appears to be the M.O. of our state’s popular belief.
Religious belief is a personal thing and should be kept at that level. It is hard enough to keep church and state separate without every religion, cult, or sect vying for the upper hand on what is being taught as “intelligent design”, or as I see it, religion.
We can all see what is happening in the middle east and other areas of the world where religions control the government. If you have lived in Utah for any length of time, and have not had your eyes closed, you should be able to see down the road of time.
On the opposite side of the argument we have “evolution”. Even with all of the empirical evidence there are still those in the middle of the road who are not sure which side to take, probably because of peer pressure. However, no matter how you look at it, even by reading Mr. Sharps quotes, one can see that the study of evolution as a science is in reality, bringing to light the mysteries of life in the past, and through DNA, our ancestors, or those close to us.
This is real time, not based on the charisma, the humor, or how great a story teller one is. It is also not based on the ability to gather a following of indigent in need of a crutch, such as was done by Jim Jones, the leader at Waco, or the leader of the Moonies.
The quote used at the end of Mr. Sharp’s letter might, or might not have actually been said. With everyone trying to interpret and rewrite what is written in the bible, who knows what it will say years from now.
The quote used, sounds like a threat. Maybe this fear is what makes one become a fanatic.
