On Sept. 23, Carbon cross-country runners traveled to Spanish Fork for an invitational meet. Because of the football game against Delta at home, the team had to be back before 7 p.m. so some of them could play in the band. A lot of other teams at the meet had the same situation. As a result many of them ran in the junior varsity division.
Paul Goodrich placed first in the junior varsity. He still had plenty of competition from the others that were in similar circumstances. The top five boys for Carbon included Jacob Perez, Kent Olsen, Beau Morley, and Sam Madrid.
The other team members running in the 6th, 7th, and 8th spots were running close. They included Jared Richens, Jordan Burrows, Brett Wells, and Stetson Kunz. Both James Macheiaski and Bradon Watkins also ran well, and had personal best times.
In the girls race Rebecca Goodrich and Katie Palmer ran excellent races for their first race. All three girls finished in the middle of the pack.
There were about 150 athletes in both the boys and girls races. Palmer and Rebecca Goodrich are both 9th graders, and had only worked out for three days.
“We were pleasantly surprised,” said assistant coach Stewart Foster.
Paige Morley, was the top female athlete, with Katie Hobbs, and Ashley Anderson close behind.
The next meet will be on Wednesday and it will take place at Carbon High. The girls race will start at 4 p.m., followed by the boys race at 4:30 p.m. The races begin on the soccer field and end on the track.
