The local ranger district of the Manti-LaSal National Forrest plans to implement a prescribed burning project within the Ferron Creek drainage area.
The project site is located near Ferron Canyon Road between Willow Lake and Ferron Reservoir, indicated the federal agency. The controlled burn could start as early as Oct. 1 and will continue until completed.
The exact dates will not be known until several days before the burn since the activity is weather dependent, pointed out the Price-Ferron ranger district
The most favorable burning conditions generally occur in mid-August through Oct. 31.
By burning in the fall under controlled conditions, the effects of the prescribed fire can be managed.
While the prescribed burn is taking place, the area in question will be closed to the public, indicated the Price-Ferron ranger district.
There may be delayed or temporary closures on Ferron Canyon Road and forest development road 022.
Traffic may be routed around to the south side forest development road 043.
Prescribed burns are used for a variety of resource benefits, including wildlife habitat, reduced fuel buildup from insect killed trees, and to support ecosystem diversity, added the Price-Ferron ranger district.
Aspen stands provide habitat for wildlife, forage for livestock and protects steam flows in critical watersheds. Aspen is being lost by encroachment of conifers. Aspen regenerates by sprouting following a controlled burn or other disturbance, concluded the Price-Ferron ranger district.
