West High School in Salt Lake City will name its newly refurbished football stadium the “Gean Plaga Field” on Friday night after a former Carbon High standout athlete, Gean Plaga.
Plaga was an all-state football and baseball player for the Dinos during the late 1940s. He went on to a career on the gridiron and diamond at the University of Utah before accepting a position as the football and baseball coach at West High.
During his 18 years as football and baseball coach at the Salt Lake City school, Plaga lead his teams to many victories.
His football teams won four state championships in seven state title games after winning 10 regional titles.
Plaga’s baseball teams won three state titles and 14 regional championships.
Plaga will be honored at half time of West’s home game with Granger on Friday evening when the stadium will be designated “Gean Plaga Field.”
Plaga grew up in Helper, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Plaga. He was a standout on the Helper American Legion baseball teams prior to attending the University of Utah. He has a sister, Betty Mascaro, and a brother, Hap Plaga, residing in Helper.
