A 640-acre parcel of land in Bear Canyon will be auctioned off in the next Utah School and Utah Institutional Trust Lands Administration’s auction in Salt Lake City in October.
SILTA will offer the Bear Canyon parcel and trust lands in seven other Utah counties for public sale at an auction on Oct. 7 at the Little America Hotel.
The administration determined that the disposal of the properties is timely and in the best interest of trust land beneficiaries, according to the state agency.
Several of the pieces are suitable for recreational use, along with having agricultural potential, pointed out SILTA representatives.
The 640-acre Bear Canyon parcel in Carbon County is about 20 miles northeast of Sunnyside. SILTA indicated that the site consists of rocky slopes that are suitable for big-game habitat or grazing of livestock.
The trust lands administration decided to dispose of the parcel due to the fact that the property produces only minimal revenue from grazing activities.
The Bear Canyon parcel is bordered by federal lands and private property.
Interest has been expressed in the sale of the parcel. Recent sales of trust lands within the Bear Canyon area have proven to be equitable for beneficiaries, noted the minutes involving the Sept. 2 trust land administration’s actions.
The proposal to dispose of the parcel was submitted on July 19 to the state’s resource development coordinating committee.
The state planning coordinator’s office reviewed the proposal to dispose of the property by the trust lands administration and provided comments from the Utah Geological Survey.
“Potential geological hazard in the area that may affect the parcel include flash flooding and/or debris flow, rockfall, and moderate to high indoor radon potential,” stated the Utah Geological Survey.
The UGS has general hazard information available for public review. The UGS recommended that the trust lands administration disclose potential hazards of the property to all prospective buyers .
In preparation for the parcel’s sale, the trust lands administration’s archeology staff conducted a cultural survey of the area. The staff found no historic properties would be affected by the sale and use of the property.
The paleontology staff also reviewed the proposal and reported that no properties would be affected.
Parcels of land are also available in Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Piute, Rich, Box Elder and Washington counties.
The section of trust lands in Carbon County is the largest single parcel listed on the October auction’s agenda.
However, the school trust land parcels identified for sale in Box Elder Count add up to more than 2,200 acres. The parcels in Piute County total 640 acres .
The sections of land vary from the 2200 acres within Box Elder to 40 acres and less within Garfield and Beaver counties.
The Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration is an independent state agency. SILTA manages 3.4 million acres of trust lands in the state for the benefit of Utah schools as well as other public institutions. The money raised by the auctions goes to the permanent fund of Utah’s public schools.
State financing is available on parcels of land up for auction. Carbon County residents may obtain additional information about the auction by calling the state agency at 877-526-3725.
