Letter to the Editor: Being lost not necessary

By Sun Advocate

Editor:
Recently stories have appeared on the news about people being lost in the Utah wilderness, particularly scouts. These situations, it seems to me, have been totally unnecessary.
Years ago, when my dad was a supervisor for the Blue Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts, he invented the “Dry pack” of matches. This was one or more books of matches wrapped in cellophane, then taped with scotch tape. This made the matches waterproof.
People should practice making these dry pack matches until they are certain that they can do it and they should submerge them in water overnight, just to make sure the pack works.
Dad also required all scouts who could not read a compass or did not have one to stay in camp.
