The Carbon High girl’s soccer team started off the season fairly well after playing great at a tournament in Park City on August 19 and 20 but suffering a rough loss against Tooele last Tuesday.
The tournament at South Summit High School in Park City earlier this month demonstrated how prepared the Dinos are for the season with two great wins by the varsity team.
Both varsity and junior varsity teams brought home second place finishes after the tournament in Park City. Carbon had 22 players compete in the Park City tournament.
Carbon’s varsity team went up against South Summit, Grantsville and Grand, winning two out of the three games that they played during the tournament.
Carbon had no problem defeating South Summit in a 1-0 game on August 19. The team took an amazing 14 shots on goal during this game. Samantha Smith scored the only goal of the game.
Grantsville then went up against and overtook the Dinos in game two of the tournament for Carbon.
Both teams played extremely well in this game but Grantsville completed the game two goals ahead, 4-2, against Carbon.
The varsity team then went up against Grand, easily winning 3-1.
Scorers for this game were Patricia Smith, Brenda Davis and Tabby Cummins. Carbon once again out shot their opponents during this game but were only able to get two goals in.
The junior varsity team also played great, playing just two games in the tournament. Carbon’s third opponent, Grand, forfeited their game.
Patricia Smith was the only scorer in the junior varsity game against South Summit, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
The game against Grantsville also turned out to be a tie, 0-0, but still saw some great action and incredible defense from the girls of Carbon soccer.
The Dinos not only played well, but also out shot their competitors by an incredible amount in all games of the tournament.
On August 23, the Dinos went up against the Tooele Buffaloes in what turned out to be an upset for Carbon.
The Tooele team came out onto Carbon’s field Tuesday determined to score goals and ended the game with a 5-0 win.
Yet again, Carbon took the shots but just couldn’t get them in.
The girls have been playing extremely well so far this season. Even after the Tooele loss, Carbon is still at the top of the region and is doing better than in the previous years.
Though the team is taking plenty of shots during games, they are working harder to get the shots into the goal.
Carbon’s soccer coach, Tanya Henrie, said that the girls will be concentrating on accuracy over the next few weeks to improve their skills. This year’s team doesn’t seem to have any problem moving the ball up the field.
Coach Henrie has also been having them set goals during every game, which they seem to meet every time. This should help them score more goals and win more games this season.
“Our defense really stepped up this weekend and did not allow anything to get through,” said Coach Henrie about the tournament in Park City. “We gave up too many goals the last few games that we decided to make a big change in our defensive line and it really paid off. Not only did we win, but we won with a shut out.”
The girls will be playing next this Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in a home game against Granite. Granite is currently 0-1 and hasn’t had as much play as Carbon so far in the season. This is sure to be a great match up.
