After going undefeated in the season last year, the girls of Carbon High’s volleyball team have suffered a few losses early on in the 2005 season against 4A and 5A teams alike during the Las Vegas Tournament on August 27 and the Skyline Tournament of Champions on August 18-20.
Carbon High started off the season with play against several bigger teams during the tournament at Skyline.
The Dinos started off Thursday with a total of five games against 5A power Taylorsville on August 18. Taylorsville is known to be a tough contender for any other 5A team to beat, but the Dinos found it easy to take them down in three of the five games.
The first game against Taylorsville was a loss on Carbon’s part. The Dinos lost 13-25 against the tough 5A team.
Game two turned out to be the opposite of the previous game. Carbon won this game with four points on Taylorsville, 25-21.
In game three Carbon had two points on Taylorsville, 25-23.
Game four was 25-18 for Taylorsville. This win turned game five into a tie breaker for the two teams.
Carbon kept cool and easily defeated the Taylorsville team 15-12 in the match, taking a win against a fairly tough team.
Also on Thursday, Carbon took on another 5A team, Pleasant Grove, but didn’t come out looking as good as the last time. Pleasant Grove is a newly 5A team after being moved to the 5A division after the end of the last school year. Pleasant Grove also took second place during the 4A championship against Lone Peak in 2004.
Carbon and Pleasant Grove played a total of three games against each other, the Pleasant Grove team winning all three.
Even though these games were all lost by Carbon, they were all fairly close calls. Game one and two were both 19-25 while game three was 23-25.
Also on Thursday, Carbon went up against South Severe, a 2A team. Carbon played a total of four games against South Sevier, winning three out of the four of the games against them.
Only game one was lost to South Sevier in this match up. Losing game one looked to be a signal for what could be a bad match for the Dinos. This turned out not to be the fact when Carbon came roaring back in game two with a 25-14 win against the South Severe team.
The next two games followed by example, all ending in wins for Carbon. Game three was 25-17 and game four was 25-14.
Friday was also full of games for Carbon High at the Skyline Tournament of Champions.
In Friday’s match up, Carbon went up against Brighton, yet another 5A team. They played just three games against each other, all three ended up going to the Brighton team. Brighton, who is currently undefeated in the season, ended all three games in the match with at least a 10 point lead on Carbon, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-13.
Also on Friday, the Dinos went up against 4A championship team, Lone Peak. Four games were played in this match, three of which ended up going to the Lone Peak team. Carbon did win the first game of the match 25-22 but lost the next three 16-25, 19-25 and 13-25.
Carbon also went up against visiting Alaska team, South Anchorage on Friday. South Anchorage won all three games against the Dinos 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16.
Carbon had a chance to go back up against the Pleasant Grove team on Saturday and possibly redeem themselves for their earlier losses on Thursday. This didn’t work out as well as most Carbon fans probably would have liked, Pleasant Grove once again taking all three games, 25-19, 25-13 and 25-12.
Carbon next went up against Skyline on Saturday, August 27 during the Las Vegas Tournament. Skyline won two games against Carbon during this match up.
Skyline won game one of the tournament with a 10 point lead over the Dinos, 25-15. Game two was a close call and was won by just three points by Skyline, 25-22.
Carbon will be playing again tonight against Uintah at home. While Carbon is currently in first place in the region, Uintah is fourth and shouldn’t be too much of an obstacle for the 3A championship Carbon team. This game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
