American Legion prepares for championship

By Sun Advocate

The Helper American Legion team is heading towards the finals with two wins and a forfeit behind them in the state championships being held in Kearns.
Game one of the finals was scheduled to start on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Weber at the Oquirrh Park in Kearns. Helper wouldn’t have had any problem defeating this team but Weber forfeited before Helper had a chance to.
The second game Helper was scheduled to play was against Cedar on Monday. Cedar came on strong in the first inning with two runs then slowed up with no runs in the second and third.
Helper didn’t complete any runs in the first, leaving them two behind, but with one run in the second and one in the third, pulled themselves into a tie going into the fourth.
Cedar came into the fourth and completed one run while Helper scored zero. The game didn’t look very good at the bottom of the fifth after Cedar scored another run to Helper’s zero, leaving Cedar slightly ahead 4-2.
The sixth inning saw no runs by either team, but Cedar came into the seventh scoring one run before the end of their inning. Helper then rallied from Cedars three run lead scoring four amazing runs in the inning.
Aaron Sandoval pitched an amazing game, while Chris Hatch scored a double and Chandler Pearson scored an RBI triple.
Game three turned out even better for Helper, who demolished St. George on Tuesday, 15-4 in the winners bracket of the semifinals.
Helper took control of the game by scoring three runs in the second inning. Tyler Nelson hit a three-run triple during a nine-run sixth inning for Helper.
Adam Martinez pitched a great game after starting off slow.
Helper next moved up against Taylorsville last night at 7 p.m. in the championship final. Results were not available by print time.
The Helper American Legion team has an undeniably strong set of players this year. From Carbon High’s championship team comes several players along with several Emery players.
With this great set of players there is no doubt that Helper has a great chance of bringing home a title.
