The Bureau of Land Management is hosting a wild horse and burro adoption at the Carbon County Fairgrounds indoor arena on July 30.
Approximately 40 head of wild horses will be available for the adoption and 6-8 wild burros. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
BLM’s wild horse and burro specialist, Mike Tweddell said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to bring the family to see a wild horse, and if possible, adopt one and take it home with you. BLM is looking for good homes for these animals. They respond to genuine caring and gentling techniques, and for those willing to take the time to work with them, they become great companions.”
Cliff Tipton, Utah’s own wild horse trainer, will demonstrate gentling techniques for wild horses from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday. Tipton lives in Erda and is known for his wild horse gentling techniques.
“BLM brings a trainer to the adoptions to demonstrate techniques in gentling wild horses. Even if you have no intention of adopting a wild horse, just sitting in on one of these demonstrations is well worth the time spent. We encourage all those who want to adopt a wild horse at this event or in the future, to come and listen to what they have to say about getting close to your animal,” said Tweddell
According to Tweddell, the horses will be run through a competitive bid auction and the beginning price is $125. While some animals may adopt for more, most will be adopted near the base price of $125.
The wild horses available at the adoption will be weanlings, yearlings, young mares and studs. All animals have been wormed, freeze marked, vaccinated and will have a clean bill of health.
On Friday, July 29, horses and burros will be available for viewing from noon to 9 p.m., and on Saturday, July 30, registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the adoption beginning at 1 p.m.
Adopters must be pre-approved before bidding on a horse. Additional information on adoption and the adoption application can be found on the web at http://www.ut.blm.gov/.

A wild horse requires a three-horse trailer for transport. Those who wish to adopt a horse should bring one.
