The Helper American Legion team easily defeated the Olympus Titans 8-7 and 11-3 in a doubleheader on Monday.
The first game started out great for Helper, who with a lot of hard work and dedication from team members, succeeded in keeping a lead the entire game.
Helper had a good lead from the start of the game while the Titans tried to pull themselves out of a loss. They almost succeeded in their attempts by scoring several runs later in the game and almost pulling themselves out of a loss. No matter how hard Olympus played, they couldn’t quite match the talent of Helper’s American Legion team who ended the game with a one run lead of 8-7.
Helper turned out to be the better team in the match up, scoring more runs and preventing the Titans from reaching home.
Joe Via ended the first game with a double behind him. And Chris Hatch managed an amazing homer during game one of the doubleheader.
The Titans handed Helper the second game of the day as well.
Olympus seemed to have a problem with getting anyone on base. The Titans scored a pitiful five hits and three runs to Helper’s nine hits and 11 runs.
Many members of Helper’s team helped decide the outcome of the game. Cheered on by the crowd, Tyler Nelson hit an incredible home run during game 2.
Both games also had some incredible pitching from the Helper team. Morgan Bates only gave up ten hits and seven runs in game one, while Dustin Howa did even better in game two, by only giving Olympus a total of five hits and just three runs.
While only game one of the doubleheader counted in league standings, Helper should receive an extra boost of confidence after this overwhelming victory over the Titans.
The Helper American Legion team is comprised of the best high school baseball players all over Carbon and Emery counties.
Over half of the Helper team is comprised of 2005’s 3A state champions from Carbon High School, while the others are the cream of the crop from their schools. Because of this, Helper looks to be a favorite for the championship this year, even after stumbling during the Helper tournament last weekend.
After the latest games, Helper is undefeated in their league, 3-0, and 8-4 overall.
While Helper traveled to Kearns Post on Wednesday, scores were not available by press time.
Supporters of the Helper American Legion team should remember to attend the next home game tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against West.
Fans should also keep in mind that the doubleheader scheduled for Saturday against Taylorsville could be rescheduled for a later date.
