With technical education looming as a bigger and bigger part of the local educational scene, local students involved in state competitions have done well this year. Here are some of those that have excelled in various fields of study.
•Jeremiah Blair, a concurrent enrollment student at Carbon High and the College of Eastern Utah took the silver medal at the SkillsUSA competition in welding. He competed against 24 other top students of the skill from across the state.
•In cosmetology, Caitlin Thomas earned a silver medal at the SkillsUSA competition and was invited to compete at the national competition. She was accompanied by nine other students from the area to the state meet.
•In diesel technology, Ross Christensen took second place at the SkillsUSA competition and two other students placed fourth and ninth in a competition that had 17 total entrants.
•Students from various business disciplines also have done well at competitions over the past year.
CEU business students took first, second, fourth and fifth in accounting at the PBL state competition. Students from this department have placed in the top 10 each year for 27 consecutive years. During that time they have placed first in the state twice. This years crop of students will provide three contestants for the national competition in Orlando, Fla.
Carbon High’s Future Business Leaders of America club placed 20 students in the eastern region competition, with two students qualifying for nationals. All in all, the team ranked 10th in entrepreneurship, fifth in job interviews, fifth in word processing, seventh in annual reports, third in American enterprise, third in partnership in business and fifth in banking and finance. The Carbon High club was awarded the Gold Seal Chapter.
The FBLA boys also presented Reality Town to both the Helper and Mont Harmon Junior High students this year as well.
The Carbon High DECA club also had great success at competition this year.
At state competition the club had one student who was a finalist and one who took first place in marketing management. That student later went to Anaheim, Calif. to the international competition and represented the area well.
Carbon High FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America) also competed at state.
Five students, Angela Dinkelman, Brianna Johnson, Cassidy Morley, Erica Jenson, and Maren King took first place in their event and qualified to attend the national convention in San Diego, Calif. this summer.

At the junior high level, Mont Harmon students recently went to Utah Valley State College’s technology fair and took away some important awards.
The students who came from the manufacturing class at the school competed in three types of events; metal fabrication, bed furniture and miscellaneous wood furniture. The project submitted were planned, developed and built during the year in Mark Carrillo’s manufacturing class. Chris Tonc took first place in metal fabrication with his bike racks. Jordi Pincock won first place with his spiral log bed. Lynn Wells won third place with her log bed. Beau Moynier earned a first place with a log-swinging bench.
