While North Sanpete’s team celebrated in the middle of the Dino soccer field Friday evening patting each other on the back and while their goalie did cartwheels, Carbon’s players walked off with long faces that were mirrored by their coach Keith Palmer.
“It’s very disappointing,” he said as he knelt down looking for documents for the referees to sign.
The “disappointment” was a one point loss in overtime during a game in which the Dinos had dominated the Hawks in almost every aspect of the game except the final score. In the end, about three minutes into overtime North Sanpete was able to belt one into the south goal and ended the game, winning by a 2-1 margin.
Judging by the way the Carbon team looked on Friday afternoon, it would be easy to imagine them contending for the Region 8 championship this year. Full of fire and confidence the Dinos dwelled on North Sanpetes end of the field most of the afternoon keeping them defensive rather than offensively minded.
But while it takes a team in the round football sport to win, the Dinos biggest obstacle was the Hawks goalie. Time and time again he warded off some good Dino shots at the goal. Not long before the game ended regulation play he took one strong shot right down the middle and was able to punch it up and over the goal.
That’s not to say that Carbon didn’t have a strong goal stand either. Dino goalie Jacob Denison blew away many shots himself.
But it wasn’t what was fired on the goal as much as it was the defense down field. The mid-field play of the Dino’s was far superior to the Hawks. They took the ball away from the red-shirted team time and time again and were able to control the game. That was except for those two shots which slipped through.
Carbon now stands with a 0-2 record in league play (3-6 overall).
The Dinos next home game will be on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. when they play Lehi.
