It was one of those days when things just were not right. And Lane Herrick knew it.
“It was a bad game for us,” he said on Wednesday. “I just don’t have any pitchers really healthy right now.”
Herrick was right, He went through four guys before the pain was over, as Spanish Fork defeated the Carbon Dinos 10-0.
“They were throwing their top pitchers at us and we had used up our staff in St. George,” said the coach. “We were tired.”
Because of that, the Dons were able to register a no-hitter in the battle between a 4A and 3A school. In recent years Carbon has often played Spanish Fork and beaten them, but not this year.
The first inning was a fast one with the Dons scoring one run. From there the score just seemed to go up quickly for the Spanish Fork boys. In the second inning they put two runs on the board and then another five in the third inning. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that Carbon was able to stop the bleeding with the Dons leading 8-0.
Carbon did load up the bases a couple of times during the game, but were not able to put anyone across home plate.
Herrick says that despite the performance on Tuesday night, the team has been doing well during the preseason.
“In St. George we were able to win two against ranked teams and then lost some close ones to other good teams,” he stated.
At the Pizza Hut tournament the team outdid highly ranked Wasatch 7-3 and then put down another ranked team in Grantsville 8-7.
The loses came to Dixie 5-4 and to Bishop Manoque Catholic High School of Reno, Nev. 6-5.
Earlier the team also went to Moab where they beat Grand High and then lost to Springville.
“To show the difference in how we are playing with all that wear and tear on us, Springville, which I believe is a much better team than Spanish Fork and will probably defeat them in region play only got by us 5-3,” said Herrick. “Actually, I should have looked at the schedule and just given us more time to rest.”
The team now goes on their annual trek to Montrose, Colo. to face three Colorado teams in the tournament there. They will be playing Northridge and Silver Creek on Friday and then will go up against Lakewood on Saturday.
Region 8 play begins next week when Carbon goes up against Emery on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
It will also be Carbon’s first home game of the season.
