Nicholas Davis
HELPER- Nicholas Kole Davis, our precious little red-headed “Buggie,” son and brother, was called home to be with his angel on March 12, 2005.
He was born Dec. 31, 2004 in Price to Mike Davis and Sara Powell. Although his time on earth was brief, he will forever be with us. Our precious baby was blessed on Feb. 6 in the LDS Church.
Our handsome baby is survived by parents, Mike Davis and Sara Powell; big brother, MaCade Davis, Helper; grandparents, Todd and Karen Davis, Carbonville; Kenneth and Joyce Powell, Price; great-grandparents, Jack Birch, Price; Nana Beth Davis, Price; Richard and Arline Powell, Wellington; anf Alberta Christensen, Wellington. Also survived by many loving aunts and uncles and his special cousins, Todd, Taycie, Shontae and Skyler, who will love him always and forever. Preceded in death by grandparents LaPreal Birch, Bruce Davis, Neva Davis, James and Wilba Fowles and Grant Christensen. Also preceded in death by cousins, aunts, uncles and his special uncle, Nicholas Kosmos Gallegos.
There was a viewing Monday, May 15, at Mitchell’s Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 15at 1 p.m., with a viewing one hour prior to services. Interment, Cliffview Cemetery following the services.
Gladys Nelson
FERRON – Gladys B. Nelson was the last living member of the Mary Ann Hansen, James Ormandy Braithwaite family of seven children.
Gladys was born April 26, 1902 in Manti. She married Bryant Andrew Nelson Nov. 14, 1921 in Manti. Later sealed in the Manti LDS Temple.
She raised her children during the Great Depression. The welfare of her family was her priority. She always had animals and a large garden to care for.
Gladys made many quilts and crocheted many lovely and useful items. She served as visiting teacher, Sunday School teacher, counselor in the Relief Society and president of the young women’s MIA.
Mother had many lifelong friends, her home was always open to friends and family. She and Bryant loved to camp and fish. In November 1997, Gladys moved into Turnquist Retreat at Elmo under the wonderful care of Caleen and Butch Wilcox and their caring staff.
Surviving children are Dora Dean N. Snow, Salt Lake City; Bryant Glade Nelson (Becky), Clawson; James F. Nelson (Catherine), Castle Dale; and Earl Ray Nelson, Ferron, a posterity of 27 grandchildren, 76 great-great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Helen N. Sorensen, residing at the Ferron Rest Home. Preceded in death are LaRue N. Petitti (John J.), Price; Glenna twin to Glade and Joseph twin to James.
Funeral services were Thursday, March 10, at the Ferron Blue Hills LDS Ward. Interment, Ferron City Cemetery.
Daisy Brazier
PRICE – On Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Price at the Castle Country Care Center, Daisy Inez Brazier passed away at 5:30 a.m. into God’s hands, finally relieving her of physical pain and suffering.
She was born to Joseph Ray Brazier, her father, and Daisy Malone Brazier, her mother, in Drumright, Okla., the youngest of three children. After her brother, Roy, passed away, Daisy was raised by her sister, Sylvia LeMaster, and Silvia’s loving husband, Ralph. At age 16, she married Raymond Poche in New Orleans, La., and had two lovely daughters, Suzzette Marie and Patricia Ann. She later divorced and married Jack Dickerson of Leesville, La., and had two more children, Jack Brian (Butch) Dickerson and Sylvia Jo Dickerson.
Life was not easy in her earlier years, but later in life, Daisy came to live in Price near her sister, Sylvia, and her daughters Suzzette and Patricia. It was during that time she gave her life to Christ at the First Southern Baptist Church.
Over the past 20 years Daisy gave of herself to her church and its congregation and to her great friends who she worked with at the U.S. Forest Service. Daisy often shared her wonderful God given talents as a poet and artist over the years to those she knew and loved.
She is survived by older sister, Sylvia (LeMaster) Clerico, of Price; daughters, Suzzette Marie Williams of Wellington and her husband, Orvil; Patricia Ann Dalpiaz of Salt Lake City and her husband, Paul; son, Jack Dickerson of Texas; grandchildren, Patrick of Tacoma, Wash.; Ralph of Elmo; Malinda Dunnam of Taos, N.M.; and Jessica Daisy Dalpiaz of Salt Lake City. She leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a grandchild, Le.
A memorial service will be Friday, March 18, 6 p.m. in Price at the First Southern Baptist Church. Come not in sadness, but in joy, for she is now in a better place with her God.
It was Daisy’s wish that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to First Southern Baptist Church, c/o Pastor Mike McGuire, PO Box 838, Price, UT 84501, in celebration of her life.
Dan Huntsman
CASTLE DALE – Dan Lee Huntsman, 64, passed away March 11, 2005 in Orem.
Born Oct. 7, 1940 in Castle Dale to Leland J. and Ruth A. Huntsman. He was the oldest of five children.
Dan grew up in Castle Dale and graduated from South Emery High School. He married his childhood sweetheart, Karen Kofford, on June 27, 1958. Solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 21, 1964.
He worked for Monroe Calculator Inc. for 16 years. Then worked for Savage Brothers Industries for 29 years.
He was the president of the Cedar City Jaycees. He served in the LDS Church as a secretary in the elders quorum and as stake clerk in Castle Dale for nine years.
He loved his family, four-wheeling, camping, computers, Christmas lights in SLC, family reunions, and swinging on the porch. He had a great appreciation and love for the outdoors.
Dan leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Karen; mother, Ruth; children, Clyde (Kimberly Jo), of Castle Dale; Laren (Lanell), of Castle Dale; Kimberly (Doug) Snow, of Providence; Darrell (Lisa), of Mason, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Ramona Kaehl, Ronald, Irene Fossat and Calvin. He was preceded in death by father, Leland.
Services were Monday, March 14, 11 a.m., at the Castle Dale LDS Stake Center. Burial, Castle Dale Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Ruth Nelson
FERRON – Ruth McConkie Nelson died March 11, 2005 in Ferron of causes incident to age.
She was born Nov. 26, 1919 in Moab, the fourth of six children to William Russell McConkie and Nora Johnson McConkie. Ruth married James Rulon Nelson May 23, 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many different callings. She loved music and sang in the ward choir for many years.
She had a great sense of humor and infectious laugh. As an avid reader, she loved books of all kinds but especially literature, and history of all kinds. To her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was lovingly known as “Ice Cream Grandma.”
Ruth was raised in Moab, where she graduated from Grand County High School and later from Brigham Young University. As a longtime educator, she taught home economics, physical education, English and special education. She taught in LeVan, at Central High School in Castle Dale, at South Emery Junior High and Ferron Elementary. Even near her death, she remembered the names of all her former students.
She is survived by sister, Norma (Jon) Kerby, Poway, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Barbara H. Nelson, Salt Lake City; children, Monte (Jan) Nelson, West Valley; Sylvia (Gerald) Haycock, Sandy; Beth (Leon) Bogedahl, Torrey; James R. (Lynda) Nelson, Ferron; Anne (Michael) Thompson, Richland, Wash.; Mark (Ruth) Nelson, Ferron; and Keith (Amy) Nelson, Castle Dale. She was preceded in death by husband, J. Rulon Nelson; sons, Conrad Rulon Nelson and Clyde McConkie Nelson; parents; and siblings, Wayne McConkie, Faun Tanner, Lois Parrish and infant brother Clyde McConkie.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 19, 11 a.m., in the Millsite LDS Ward, 35 West 200 North in Ferron. Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 18, at Fausett Mortuary, 710 North Center, Castle Dale, and one hour prior to services at the chapel in Ferron.
Lanny Kirkwood
SPRING GLEN/PAONIA, Colo. – Lanny Brett Kirkwood, age 41, passed away peacefully at his home after a courageous battle with cancer on March 11, 2005.
Lanny was born Jan. 25, 1964 in Price to Lanny K. and Lavina Koss Kirkwood. Married Jodi Kulow May 3, 1986, later divorced. Married DaNeen Jensen June 9, 2002 in Paonia, Colo.
Lanny loved motocross racing and Nascar. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved to golf.
Lanny had a very great love for his family and many dear friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Survived by wife, DaNeed Kirkwood, Helper; sons, Joshua Jensen, Price; Jordon Maughan, Helper; father, Lanny K. Kirkwood, Price; mother, Lavina, Helper; sisters, Kathy (Louie) Santi, Price; Kristine Kirkwood, Grand Junction, Colo.; JoDee K. Jackson, Price; and one grandson, Jadeyn Jensen.
Memorial service Wednesday, March 16, 1 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s one hour prior to service.
Gerald Mathie Jr.
HUNTINGTON – Gerald H. Mathie Jr. (Gary), age 58, returned home March 12, 2005 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 13, 1946 in Salt Lake City to Gerald H. and Henrietta (Hedy) VanCorler Mathie.
Gary served during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army, for which he received numerous medals. He was a general contractor for most of his life, but he always returned to farming and raising cattle, which he loved.

Survived by mother, Henrietta VanCorler Mathie; children, Natalie (Kenneth) Mathie Zaelit, Torrey (Stacy) Brandon Watts; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Zaelit, Monica Goodge, Gabriel and Alexander Mathie; brother, Michael (Jeanie) Mathie; nieces and nephews, Derrick (Mandy) Stewart, Daniel Blankenship, Sandra (Pat) Carlson; and grandnieces, Cassidy and McKinley. Preceded in death by father, Gerald H. Mathie; and sister, Deborah Kay Mathie.
Funeral service Thursday, March 17, 1 p.m., Huntington 3rd LDS Ward, 190 South Main. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church one hour prior to service. Interment, Huntington City Cemetery.
LaRue Reed
EAST CARBON – LaRue Anderson Reed, 78, of East Carbon, passed away peacefully at her home of a brain tumor.
She was born Dec. 30, 1926 to Mabel and Alfred Anderson.
LaRue loved traveling and made several fun trips with her daughter, Woodi “Char,” and sister, Rene. She also spent a great deal of time at the East Carbon senior center, where she was known as the “coffee lady.”
She was loved by her many friends there and she treasured their friendships. She was always seen driving her blue Lincoln Towncar with the special “LaRue’s” license places given to her by her husband, Woody.
Survived by daughter, Woodi Charlene Reed, East Carbon; granddaughter, Melissa Mancha, New York, N.Y.; grandson, Lynn Gates, Helper; brothers and sisters, Clair Anderson, Hanford, Calif.; Dean Anderson, Gunnison; Rene Cupples, East Carbon; and Roma Cooper and Orene Sawyer, Evanston, Wyo. Preceded in death by parents, Alfred and Mabel Anderson; and husband, Woodrow “Woody” Reed.
Family and friends will gather at Fausett Mortuary for a memorial service Wednesday, March 16, 2 p.m., followed by graveside services at the Price City Cemetery.
Brent ‘Duke’ Sartori
SALT LAKE CITY – Brent V. “Duke” Sartori, passed away March 8, 2005 surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 13, 1941 to Val and Vera Sartori in Salt Lake City. Duke was a member of the LDS church and was very proud and honored to have recently received his temple recommend.
Duke loved old musicals, John Wayne, Harleys and Elvis Presley. He was the happiest outdoors camping and fishing with his family and friends. Duke loved to cook. It didn’t matter if it was for two people or 200, whatever he cooked, you knew you were in for a wonderful meal.
Duke found it hard to say no. He would do whatever he could to help out his family and friends. To Duke, everyone was a friend. Duke was very active with the activities at the MESH. He would help to raise money by parking cars for the Jazz games, cook holiday dinners for the tenants and so much more. He did all this without complaining and always with a smile and glad heart.
Over the years, Dad became the man he wanted to be. A man with a heart of gold.
Survived by children, Mike (Shelia) of Helper; Debbie of Wellington; Kathy (Louise) Bay of Helper; Sean of Salt Lake; Kelly (Heidi) of Kearns; Audra of West Valley; his pride and joy, 12 grandchildren; sister, Barbara Nicholsen of Washington; many nieces and nephews; Jon Rosvall and lif long friend, Larry Kight. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Val; grandson, Austin; and best friend, Bud Gardner.
Services were March 12 at MESH in Salt Lake City. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
We would like to say thank you to the staff of the CICU at LDS Hospital for the wonderful care they provided to Dad. Also a very special thank you to the nurses who not only cared for Dad, but for his family throughout this very difficult time.
