In the Sun Advocate March 3 edition an article was printed titled “Fighting War on Obnoxious Weed” by Les Bowen.
For years the area around Spanish Fork was troubled with the obnoxious weed call White Top. I can remember when in the year of 1934, this weed manifested itself in the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. It had covered all farming ground fence lines and ditches for miles around the City of Spanish Fork.
When I returned from World War II in the Spring of 1946 I noticed that it had advanced up the Spanish Fork canyon to Thistle. This town was completely removed in the spring of 1983 which was caused by a large mud slide just west of the junction of US 6 and Highway 89. Each and every year thereafter I watched the White Top weed slowly advancing up the canyon. Last year 2004 as I drove west on Highway 6. I noticed that this very devastating obnoxious weed had advanced to the east side of Soldier Summit. The wind and the water will carry the seeds into White River, and within five years it will be all over Carbon County. This is a very determined weed, and the seeds can be blown by even a small breeze.
All property owners should insist their Carbon County Commissioners correlate themselves with the Utah County Commissioners and both forces take a defiant stand against this weed. This is weed that you cannot control yourself if you have neighbors or someone at the head of the ditch that does not protect their property from this determined advancing weed.
