A United States Bureau of Land Management fire fighter lights a prescribed burn in the East Coal Creek area last fall. If the weather permits, more controlled burns in the area will begin on Wednesday.
Throughout the spring, the BLM will continue wildfire mitigation efforts with prescribed fires on public lands across the district. The projects will include reduction of hazardous fuels and mitigation in the wildland/urban interface.
All project sites have been hand-thinned with chain saws and will receive follow-up treatment with prescribed fire, explained the agency.
Prescribed burning will take place at the following locations: east Coal Creek, north of East Carbon, the Price Recreation area, Tamarisk along the Colorado River, the Horsethief campground near Mineral Point and the Peters Canyon site north of Monticello.
With the exception of East Coal Creek, the crews will conduct pile burns to eliminate the slash resulting from the previous thinning efforts. At East Coal Creek, a broadcast burn method will be used to achieve the desired results.
The Coal Creek, East Carbon and Peters Point projects were developed to reduce the wildfire threat to health, public safety and private property. The Price Recreation, Tamarisk and Horsethief projects were identified to decrease the threat to public and emergency personnel safety in the event of a wildfire in or around the campgrounds.
