Children Helping Children – A fundraising effort spearheaded by the Mont Harmon Junior High Honor society, and joined by Castle Valley Center, East Carbon High School, Helper Junior High, the Light House, and Peterson Elementary, is selling paper hearts between now and Valentines Day. The hearts will be displayed on the windows of the school and the money raised, which will be matched by some local merchants, will go to South Asia orphans of the Tsunami. Donation checks may be sent to any one of the schools listed, one heart for each dollar sent will be hung up at the school in the name of the donor. Red hearts = $1 donation, purple hearts = $25 donation. A program held on February 14 at Mont Harmon Junior High will culminate the fundraiser as all monies donated will be collected together at that time. Those chairing the event hope to raise $155,000 for the relief efforts.
Seminar Fee Assistance – Utah State funding may be available to assist with the Dian Thomas “Free Publicity” seminar. Businesses that qualify (most do), will receive up to 70% assistance with the seminar fee for their full-time employees attending. Instead of sending one person, plan to send two or more to this valuable training and keep the cost down thru the Custom Fit Training Program. Tsunami Victim Relief – CEU SUN Center and United Way of Southeastern Utah are teaming up for Tsunami victim relief efforts by hosting a Community Care event on Tuesday, February 8 at CEU in the BDAC located at 451 North 300 East in Price, 100% of the funds raised that night will benefit relief efforts and purchase school supplies for Tsunami victims most in need. An open house highlighting the efforts of local schools and groups will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. by a musical program presented by local school children. AARP Driver Safety Classe – Class will be held on February 3 & 4 at the Carbon County Senior Center, 30 East 200 South, Price. The eight hour course will be taught from 1:30-5:30 each day. Defensive driving techniques, how to adjust your driving to age related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time, and much more will be taught. Most insurance companies will givr a rate discount to those 55 and older who take this class. No test is given. There is a minimal fee for the course. Volunteers Needed – ProCare (After School Program) is seeking volunteers to help out with daily activities and also substitute for regular VISTA workers when necessary. C.A.R.E. Program – The Price area has been developing a C.A.R.E. Program with the Alzheimer’s Association. The program needs caregivers who could use a break from the constant chores of taking care of a family member with memory loss. The program also needs volunteers to help provide companion services while the caregiver gets a much needed break for 1-3 hours. Volunteers will be reimbursed for mileage. The C.A.R.E. program for the Alzheimer’s Association of Utah is in the Price R.S.V.P. office which is located in the Carbon County Senior Citizens building, 30 East 200 South in Price. Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium or in the Library in the Auditorium. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Frontier Project – A local Family Support Group, Frontier Family F.U.T.U.R.E.S. meets every third Thursday in Carbon County. This is an organized parent education and support group. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Winter Fest 2005 – Price City along with several local businesses, is sponsoring the 1st annual Winter Fest. Winter Fest 2005 will be held on February 12 at Pioneer Park in Price. Activities will begin at 11 a.m. and run until 3:00 p.m. and include sledding and tubing on the park hill, a snow sculpture contest, prizes and giveaways and free warm beverages. From 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. the public is invited to participate in a free evening of swimming at the Price City Desert Wave Pool. VFW Field Service Officer Visit – On Feb. 17 a Field Service Officer from the VFW Department Service Office in Salt Lake City will be visiting Price to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to qualify for assistance.
