A half is a half is a half.
And while Carbon only dominated two quarters of the game, each in different halves of the contest with North Sanpete on Friday night, it was enough to push them to their first victory of the young Region 8 league season.
The 59-50 win puts Carbon at 1-2 and gives them incentive to move on to play Lehi Wednesday night at home (7 p.m.).
While the team lost it’s other contest of the week to Delta (a 62-51 defeat) without the services of Miles Hunsaker who was out for a game, the North Sanpete game was of particular importance. And the hero of this Friday night contest was Schyler Nammany, who put in four three pointers in the first quarter and then added another in the fourth period when the game was in jeopardy.
In the first period it seemed Carbon couldn’t miss a shot. Everything they tossed toward the basket seemed to go in and the crowd from Sanpete that filled half the south bleachers seemed pretty quiet. The Hawk players on the bench had a look of shock on their faces as Carbon finished out the quarter with a 22-12 lead.
In the second period the game became much more contentious. Carbon put on a full court press most of the time and kept the Hawks from scoring much (only 6 points for the quarter).
But meanwhile the Dinos had cooled off considerably and didn’t do any better as the half time score reflected at 28-18.
In the third quarter North Sanpete threw on pressure and shut Carbon’s scoring down to one basket in the whole period. Meanwhile they were able to put in 16 points and led when the fourth quarter began 31-30.
But as the fourth period began and Nammany’s three pointer went in Carbon went on a roll. They plastered the Hawks with shots, bringing back their first period luster with a 29-19 quarter and taking the game away from the visitors.
It was a good win for Carbon which has had trouble holding on and carrying a lead during the fourth quarter this year. They had done it against Grand Junction High so well a couple of weeks ago when they took that game and this was an extension of that trend.
The only other Dino in double figures was Chase Julian with 16 points. Hunsaker ended up with 9, Cameron Oliver had 5, both Jeremy Barker and Tyler Nelson had 4 and Bryan Gazell ended up with 2.
