Children Helping Children – A fundraising effort spearheaded by the Mont Harmon Junior High Honor society, and joined by Castle Valley Center, East Carbon High School, Helper Junior High, the Light House, and Peterson Elementary, is selling paper hearts between now and Valentines Day. The hearts will be displayed on the windows of the school and the money raised, which will be matched by some local merchants, will go to South Asia orphans of the Tsunami. Donation checks may be sent to any one of the schools listed, one heart for each dollar sent will be hung up at the school in the name of the donor. Red hearts = $1 donation, purple hearts = $25 donation. A program held on February 14 at Mont Harmon Junior High will culminate the fundraiser as all monies donated will be collected together at that time. Those chairing the event hope to raise $155,000 for the relief efforts.
Tsunami Victim Relief – CEU SUN Center and United Way of Southeastern Utah are teaming up for Tsunami victim relief efforts by hosting a Community Care event on Tuesday, February 8 at CEU in the BDAC located at 451 North 300 East in Price, 100% of the funds raised that night will benefit relief efforts and purchase school supplies for Tsunami victims most in need. An open house highlighting the efforts of local schools and groups will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. by a musical program presented by local school children. Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation – a non-profit group that helps injured and orphaned wildlife. Help is needed year-round for various projects. Cash donations are always needed and greatly appreciated. For information call Debbie Pappas at 637-7055 or Debbie Sartori at 637-1372.
Workout For Your Health – Carbon Rec offers low impact aerobic, weight and many other fitness techniques classes from Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. $2.00 per class or passes available. Sandy Winn teaches Monday and Wednesday, Diane Truscott Tuesday and Thursday at Castle Heights Elementary.
Volunteers Needed – ProCare (After School Program) is seeking volunteers to help out with daily activities and also substitute for regular VISTA workers when necessary. High school students and all adults welcome. Those over 18 must pass background check prior to working with ProCare. Foster Grandparents – Volunteers of America-Utah needs grandparents to join the Foster Grandparent Program team. Foster Grandparents receive a modest non-taxable stipend of about $200 per month. Individuals who are at least 60 years old; love children; have a limited income, and extra time to share may qualify. FGP volunteers serve 15 hours per week in local schools, receive a daily meal, a yearly physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty, and mileage reimbursement to and from the school. C.A.R.E. Program – The Price area has been developing a C.A.R.E. Program with the Alzheimer’s Association. The program needs caregivers who could use a break from the constant chores of taking care of a family member with memory loss. The program also needs volunteers to help provide companion services while the caregiver gets a much needed break for 1-3 hours. Volunteers will be reimbursed for mileage. The C.A.R.E. program for the Alzheimer’s Association of Utah is in the Price R.S.V.P. office which is located in the Carbon County Senior Citizens building, 30 East 200 South in Price. Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium or in the Library in the Auditorium. This committee has been formed by Volunteers to acquire a new Helper City Community Pool.
USDA Salinity Program – The Environmental Quality Incentives Program and Salinity Parallel Program and voluntary conservation programs administered by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. The program supports production agriculture and environmental quality as compatible goals. Applications for the program in Carbon and Emery counties are accepted on a continuous basis at the NRCS office in Castle Dale and Price. EQIP and Salinity Parallel are competitive programs. Applicants are evaluated on a combination of conservation practices. The offers should address local resource priorities and the use of cost effective conservation practices. The offers with the highest ranking scored are selected for funding. All completed offers recieved by NRCS by the close of business January 31, 2005 will be ranked for funding for the 2005 program allocation. Offers recieved after that date will remain on file for evaluation during the next funding period with will likely be in 2006. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. VFW Field Service Officer Visit – On January 20, 2005 a Field Service Officer from the VFW Department Service Office in Salt Lake City will be visiting Price to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to qualify for assistance. The officer will be working out of the Price Workforce Services Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Please bring the following documents so that we may better serve you: DD form 214, marriage/divorce papers, birth/adoption/death certificates, children’s social security numbers.
