The Carbon High girls team just can’t seem to get much respect from the upstate sports prognosticators.
Sure they are ranked second in most places in 3A, but when the rankings for the entire state including all classifications comes out only one team from the 3A ranks, Morgan is listed there in, week after week.
When will they learn, that you can’t ignore the Lady Dinos?
Maybe if there were a rankings for the top 10 in Colorado and Utah they might do better, because of what they did to a 5A team, Central High of Grand Junction on Friday night.
They simply just destroyed them; the score was no indicator of how dominant Carbon was, because Coach Bruce Bean decided to be kind and not let all his defense oriented starters play together after the first half.
The score ended up with Carbon on top 68-46, but in the contest Carbon got to play almost everyone.
Carbon jumped out to a crushing lead and as long as the majority of the starters stayed in, the pressure stayed on. At the end of the first period the score was 23-7; at the halt it moved up to 42-15.
In the second half Bean took pity on the Grand Junctioners and substituted freely. The Lady Warriors actually started to catch up and the quarter ended with a 50-35 score. No one really got nervous, but some of the starters came back during the fourth period for a few minutes to make sure the game was salted away.
Once again Carbon was led in scoring by Morgan Warburton with 20, about four below her average game lately because her time was kept short. But she also ended up with a basket full of rebounds and nine assists. Halee Rasmussen came away with 12, and Jamie King ended up with 10.
Now Carbon begins Region 8 play by traveling to Emery tonight (Tuesday). In that game they face a rejuvenated program which this year has racked up a 9-2 record so far this year (Carbon is 10-1) and will probably be their main competition for the region crown.
