On Tuesday night the University of Southern California drubbed Oklahoma 55-10 in the Orange Bowl national championship game.
That was not expected.
Also on Tuesday night the Carbon Lady Dinos blew out the girls basketball team from Union 68-29.
That was expected.
The reason, Union came into the game 0-10 while Carbonwith high expectations to be in the state championship game this year brought a glossy record of 8-1 to the Cougar gym in Roosevelt.
But as anyone, who has had anything to do with high school sports knows, on any given night anything can happen.
But on this night it didn’t.
If the Lady Cougars were a woeful team on Tuesday morning it is hard to imagine what they must have been like on Wednesday morning. Carbon took advantage of every tool they had to post the win, with three players in double figures and their defense revved up to until the building shook.
Carbon won the game in the first quarter scoring 20 points to the Lady Cougars nine. It was ominous for the Duchesne County fans in attedance.
However, the Carbon squad did not look so invicible in the second period as they could only put 9 points on the board, but they didn’t let Union creep up on them by holding them to only 6.
The third quarter was almost a repeat of the first quarter as Carbon jumped out almost scoring at will and ending up with 23 points in the period. Union was held to an anemic 8 points.
With subs in and leading 52-18 at the beginning of the final quarter Carbon eased up a bit allowing the Lady Cougars to get into double figures in the period with 11 points. Carbon scored 16.
To show how good the defense was, or maybe how bad Union’s offense works, only one player on the Lady Cougars team scored more than 4 points.
On the other hand on Carbon’s team almost everyone contributed with Morgan Warburton leading the scoring with 21 as Halee Rasmussen put in 14 and Jamie King added 10.
The girls now face their last opponent of the preseason on Friday night as they face Central High School of Grand Junction, Colo. at 5:30 p.m.
Then next week they begin Region 8 competition by facing what might be their biggest nemisis in the league this year, Emery, next Tuesday night at the Spartan Center.
The Lady Spartans who are 9-2 actually beat up on the only team Carbon has lost to this year, Uintah, on Tuesday night. They took the game from the Lady Utes 59-51.
So it’s almost time for the rivalry to be renewed, and this year it could be much closer than it has been in recent times.
