The Dinogym was all warmed up by the Carbon girls team that had just defeated Wasatch when the boys team took the floor.Then the floor got burned up.
That’s because Canyon View and Carbon fought a scathing battle on the floor as the Dinos marched to a 64-48 victory over the Falcons, who despite being down throughout the entire game just wouldn’t give up.
Carbon was ready for victory, after losing two the weekend before at the Ben Lomond Tournament in Ogden. And they came ready to play.
From the opening tip the Dinos jumped out to a big lead and finished the first quarter with a 13-6 lead.
While not the highest octane performance, the Carbon boys were ahead and their defense seemed to be working.
However, offensively the second quarter was not good for either team. Scrappiness and some sloppiness on the part of both squads led to low scoring period with the Dinos heading into the locker room with a 19-14 lead.
That half of play was no indicator of what was to come.
Coming back from the break Canyon View seemed confident that they could make up the small deficit they found themselves in. Neither team really poured it on however and Carbon won the scoring title for the quarter 14-12.
It looked like another one of those games when attrition would win the day, rather than resilience.
But when the fourth period started, it looked like two different teams on the floor. From the beginning, offensive execution picked up quickly on both sides of the time line.
A spectacle of three pointers also flew through the air in the period. To be exact Schyler Namanny, Miles Hunsaker and Cameron Oliver were burning up the nets with the long balls, particularly Namanny who had five in the game on his way to 17 points.
The final quarter about broke the scoreboard as Carbon poured in 31 points and Canyon View hit a new stride for this game at 22.
One of the most exciting moments of the game came at a time Carbon had won the contest. Despite the big lead Parker Parsons broke away with the ball with only a few seconds left in the game and made a dramatic run down the court where he laid the ball in the basket. The Carbon bench were all on their feet watching and went nuts when the basket went through the net.
Carbon had two other players besides Namanny with double figures with Parsons and Hunsaker each putting in 18 points a piece.
The Dinos (2-4) now face Cedar City at home tonight (Tuesday), a team with a 3-3 preseason record.
If the Dinos can take the pace they held in the fourth quarter of the Canyon View game into the game with Cedar, the Redmen are in for a lot of trouble.
