It’s not bad when a 3A team can kick the heck out of 4A team, that is headed to the 5A classification next year when realignment takes place.
But that’s what happened on Tuesday evening as the Carbon girls basketball team went over the mountain and doused the big school aspirations of Spanish Fork 49-39.
Everyone in the state expects Carbon to do well this year, particularly after breaking the seeming girls state playoff jinx with their state volleyball championship, and the fact that a core of strong players are back from last years team. But facing schools where the student bodies are twice as big can be a daunting task.
The first quarter of the game was close with the score tied 10-10 at the end of the period. But in the second quarter Carbon took off outscoring the Lady Dons 16-3 in the second period.
At the half it looked as if Carbon would really blow the Utah county girls team out of the water. But then a reversal of fortune took place. In the third quarter Spanish Fork almost did to Carbon what the Lady Dinos had done to them in the second period. They outscored the Carbon girls 12-3 and brought the game back within their sights.
However, the Lady Dinos weren’t about to let that happen. They went on a scoring tear and put in 20 points in the fourth period, sealing the victory.
Carbon was led in scoring by all-state candidate Morgan Warburton with 19 points. The only other Carbon player in double figures was Jamie King with 10.
With that game behind them the team now travels to the Emery Tournament this weekend for two games, then they travel to Uintah to face the Lady Utes on Dec. 7. Their first home game will be against Wasatch on Dec.10.
