The ADA Sidewalk Project Committee met at the Housing Authority on Oct. 12 to vote on which streets to include in their recommendation to Price City, UDOT and Carbon County as those they are asking be made accessible for pedestrian vehicles for Safe Routes.
Gary Sonntag, Price City engineer, Dale Stapley, region coordinator for UDOT and Kevin Drolc, officer with the Price City police department were in attendance to answer questions and help in the selection.
After a short discussion the committee voted on Cedar Hills Drive, because of the Castle Valley Center’s 12 students who use wheelchairs and scooters, the north end of 300 East, down to 100 North, and Carbon Ave. from 100 North to Indian Hills as the north-south Routes.
All of Main Street was chosen as the east-west route. Sonntag and Stapley both agreed these would be good streets to begin repairs because they are main thoroughfares through town.
Stapley also let those in attendance know UDOT and Price City are working on plans to redesign the 100 North and Sixth West intersection to allow for a pedestrian vehicle and bike lane so that they will have a safe place to ride until the new sidewalks to the hospital and Westwood can be completed.
They plan to have the new lane ready by next summer.
Members at the committee meeting also discussed safety issues and a future scooter class to teach safe pedestrian vehicle use as well as the importance of wearing bright colored clothing.
Attendees also volunteered to serve on four subcommittees. Tom Anderson, Mike Flores, Steve Pappas and Nancy Mercer will serve on a support group committee and coordinate the buddy system to pair those who need help finding safe routes with those who are more experienced in finding their way around Price.
Shirley Matheny will be coordinating a telephone tree to establish contact with any pedestrian vehicle users who would like to be informed of meetings, and new information coming up as changes and repairs to sidewalks are made.
Mike Keller at the Castle Valley Center will be working with the ADA Sidewalk Project and setting up a committee to concentrate on issues related to the center and it’s students access in the city.
Edwin Durham, Tom Anderson and Leslie Ann Ford will be coordinating safety training. All members of these committees will be working with the ADA sidewalk project to find ways to make Price City sidewalks and streets safer for all citizens who utilize wheelchairs and scooters.
Six members of the ADA sidewalk project also attended the Price City council meeting on Oct. 13. They asked the council to support making repairs to sidewalks and curb cuts and thanked the council for its assistance in finding creative ways to fund the project.
Nick Tatton offered his help in writing grants to pay some of the costs involved. Edwin Durham asked for the council’s help with the sidewalk under the Carbon Ave. by-pass to make it safer.
Mayor Piccolo stated he had only been made aware of the problem at this particular location a short while ago and asked Durham to monitor repairs.
Nancy Mercer, an electric wheelchair user with muscular sclerosis thanked the council and all the help to make it safer for the disabled members of our community.
Riata Ganino and Kellie Criswell, the ADA sidewalk project coordinators, were elated with the council’s support and excited to move on to the next phase of the project. This includes finding ways to make repairs or make it safer until repairs can be made, as well as setting up the support group and buddy system.
