Chase Walker works on a machine in the College of Eastern Utah’s welding shop during last year’s VICA competition. Recent CEU program graduates, Walker and Cole Murray are vying to go to international welding competitions in the next few months. They were picked among 24 final contestants across the United States.
“This is quite an honor for them and for our program,” said CEU welding instructor Mike Tryon. “To have two students from our program picked for such a limited number of spots says a lot.”
The two will be soon welding up plates which will be sent for mechanical testing in Ohio. Then out of the 24 selected originally, 12 will be sent to a special training in Texas where they will then be tested and a final 6 will be selected for a weld off in Dallas. The welder with the final highest score will then be sent to Helsinki, Finland for international competition in late May 2005..
Walker is presently enrolled at Weber State University in the Welding Engineering program and Murray works at the Bonanza Power Plant in Uintah County.
