The Lady Vikings have already surpassed last season’s win record of one, taking back-to-back Region 18 games on Sept. 9 and 14.
East Carbon players always had it in themselves to win though, according to head coach Alisa Preston.
“The talent was there last season but we had personality conflicts,” she indicated. “This year, everyone is trying their hardest, not only to give an individual effort, but also to work as a team.”
East Carbon began region play with a close loss to West Desert on Sept. 7, forcing a fourth game. Each game of the match went down to the wire against a team Preston considers to be as tough as the Lady Vikings will see in Region 18.
The Lady Vikings closed the deal in a Sept. 9 game at Wendover, defeating the Lady Wildcats for their first region victory of the season. Tuesday night’s game against Meridian was decided in three games, with East Carbon in control throughout.
Two senior players, Amanda Hepworth and Samantha Madrid, have given the team experience and leadership in the early season. Preston also said juniors Skye Preston and Nicole Paiz and several sophomores have brought consistency to the team rotation.
The Lady Vikings will travel to Tintic today and host Dugway on Sept. 21. Game time is 5 p.m.
“I think they’re going to do really well this year. We’ve got a lot of talent on the team,” Preston concluded.
