Carbon golf closes in on guaranteed second place positioning
After Sept. 8 competition against North Sanpete, Carbon High is 43 strokes behind first place Delta in Region 8 golf.
The team also increased the gap between themselves and the three remaining Region 8 teams to nearly 100 strokes. According to coach Tony Pinedo, Carbon golfers have all but locked up a second place finish in the region.
Results of the region meet are as follows:
Hunter King, 88; Mike Zaccaria, 90; Shayne Burke, 77; Mark Rasmussen, 85; Kent Hartley, 90; Cameron Oliver, 79; Chase Julian, 86; Bart Hansen, 83; Brett Johnson, 79; and Jake Erramouspe, 94.
Carbon will compete in an Emery golf tournament on Sept. 16.
Dino football takes 36-0 loss on road
The Carbon High football team lost to Wasatch High School 36-0 on Sept. 10.
The team will travel to Delta on Sept. 17 to begin the Region 8 season.

Hole-in-one at Carbon Country Club
Jeff Westergard Sr. shot a hole-in-one of the sixth hole of Carbon Country Club golf course on Sept. 8.
The 161 yard shot from the blue tees was witnessed by Jeff Westergard Jr. and Louise and Cliff Woodruff. Westergard made the hole-in-one with an eight iron.
Junior High volleyball, football
The Mont Harmon Pirates and the Helper Rams hosted San Rafael and Canyon View respectively in athletic action last week.
Mont Harmon varsity volleyball defeated San Rafael 25-16, 25-15 and 15-4, while the junior varsity team won 25-16, 25-17 and 15-13. Pirate football was defeated 42-0.
Helper varsity volleyball lost its match to Canyon View in four games. Final scores were 17-25, 25-23, 9-15 and 17-19. The junior varsity team also lost its match. Final scores were 25-14, 22-25, 11-15 and 6-15.
Ram football defeated Canyon View 14-12.
Mont Harmon volleyball and football will travel to Canyon View Wednesday. Helper will play at San Rafael.
Mature buck deer tests positive for CWD
A mature buck deer in the LaSal Mountains east of Moab has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), the Division of Wildlife Resources announced Sept. 10.
Biologists believe the buck was killed by a mountain lion.
“This is the first deer to test positive for CWD in Utah this year,” said Leslie McFarlane, wildlife biologist for the DWR. “Last year, six of the 244 deer we sampled in the LaSal Mountains tested positive for the disease.”
McFarlane said that so far this year, the DWR has collected samples from 207 animals for testing. These samples have come from various areas of the state. The division wants to collect more than 2,700 samples this year.
“We’ll be taking samples from deer in specific units and from elk in the Uintah Basin and southeastern Utah,” she indicated.
A map of the units that will be sampled this year can be viewed at the DWR’s Web site (wildlife.utah.gov). Results from samples that have been submitted, and information about chronic wasting disease, are also available at the site.
