Coming up short, Carbon High football took a Sept. 3 away game against Union to the final minutes. The Dinos had trailed 0-18 going into the half.
A brilliant third quarter performance catapulted the team into a 20-18 lead. According to head coach Lane Herrick, the team was able to overcome injuries that have left the squad shorthanded and have had good energy on the field.
“We played a much better game,” he stated. “We had some kids step up and play well and I think we’re on the move.”
Penalties and turn overs in the final quarter decided the game. Union took advantage of Dino mistakes and scored a game-winning goal. Final score was 24-20.
Carbon began the season with two scoreless losses to San Juan and Uintah, making the close game a step in the right direction. Herrick said that a lot of his younger players have had to learn on the run and fill in for some injured team leaders, but that things are coming together.
The Dinos will compete against Wasatch away on Friday. The team cannot afford to make mistakes and has to play a clean game in order to leave with a win, according to Herrick.
“We’re going to get a good, full game in this week,” he commented. “Each game gets better and better and hopefully soon we’ll get some wins.”
