C.A.R.E. Program – The Price area has been developing a C.A.R.E. Program with the Alzheimer’s Association. The program needs caregivers who could use a break from the constant chores of taking care of a family member with memory loss. The program also needs volunteers to help provide companion services while the caregiver gets a much needed break for 1-3 hours. Volunteers will be reimbursed for mileage. The C.A.R.E. program for the Alzheimer’s Association of Utah is in the Price R.S.V.P. office which is located in the Carbon County Senior Citizens building, 30 East 200 South in Price. Arthritis/Fibromyalgia Course – This six-week comprehensive course will be hosted by Therapy Works, 53 South 700 East in Price on Sept. 14-19 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required. ADA Sidewalk Project – Active Re-Entry and the Community Action Resource Committee are sponsoring three ADA Sidewalk project meetings to garner information from community members who use scooters and wheelchairs. Input is needed concerning which streets to concentral initial effords on to improve safety and access and where potential hazards might exist, as well as support group activities, buddy systems and road maps for easiest routes through town. The meetings will be held on September 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the CEU Jennifer Leavitt Student Center Alumni Room, 500 N. 300 E; and on September 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the Atrium, Association of Governments Building, 375 S. 2004 We the People Bookshelf – National Endowment for the Humanities has selected Helper City Library to receive the 2004 “We the People Bookshelf” consisting of 15 books. These classic books, all of which reflect the theme of “Courage”, will engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers. The library staff encourages children of all ages to visit the library and read these wonderful classics.
Educational Opportunity Center – CEU has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice as well as assist students with a variety of services including financial aid application, college course selection and completing their GED if needed. The service is free and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium or in the Library in the Auditorium. This committee has been formed by Volunteers to acquire a new Helper City Community Pool.
Carbon Emery Reunion – “Come Play With Us,” is the theme of the Carbon Emery reunion scheduled in Salt Lake City’s Fairmont Park on Labor Day, September 6th from 11:00am to 4:00pm. This is a chance for people to come meet old friends, socialize with people from their home towns, and just be together after all these years. Current plans include having historian Ron Watt, author of Carbon County and the Carbon County Centennial Series, give a short talk. Part of the celebration will be tables set up for each of the towns of old Carbon and Emery. People will be able to register, see who else is attending from their hometown. They’ll get a name tag with their town on it so everyone can know where everyone else is from. Free Legal Clinic – In cooperation with the Seventh District Court, Utah Legal Services is holding a Free Legal Clinic on the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Seventh District Courthouse located at 149 East 100 South in Price. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Frontier Project – A local Family Support Group, Frontier Family F.U.T.U.R.E.S. meets every third Thursday in Carbon County. This is an organized parent education and support group. Anyone interested is invited to participate. Meetings begin at 7:00 at the Castle Valley Center, 755 North Cedar Hills Dr. in Price. Childcare and refreshments are available. Foster Grandparents – Volunteers of America-Utah needs grandparents to join the Foster Grandparent Program team. Foster Grandparents receive a modest non-taxable stipend of about $200 per month. Individuals who are at least 60 years old; love children; have a limited income, and extra time to share may qualify. FGP volunteers serve 20 hours per week in local schools, and receive a daily meal, a yearly physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty, and transportation to and from the school. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Economic Summit – Emery County’s 2004 Economic Summit “What’s Swell in Emery County” will be held Sept. 14 at the County Office Building in Castle Dale. Recovery Month Celebration – Carbon County celebrates Recover Month on September 10 at 5:00 p.m. in the Price Peace Gardens in downtown Price. Speakers will include Mayor Piccolo, Bob Greenberg, enforcement officials and others. Music featuring Rock n’Country starts at 7:00 p.m. and is free to the public. Snack Bar opens at 5:00 p.m. and proceeds go to the Carbon County Drug Court.
Yard Sale/Bake Sale – by Active Re-Entry and Community Action Resource Committe VISTA Volunteers to benefit Perkie Travels. The sale will be held on Sept. 24 & 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Active Re-Entry offices, 10 S. Fairgrounds Rd. in Price. All proceeds go to Perkie Travels, a non-profit service that transports Carbon and Emery patients to Provo daily for radiation treatments.
