Downtown Alive – on September 11 along Main Street in Price. Live entertainment, matinee movies at the theatres, and merchants will be having specials. Prizes will be drawn throughout the day. Non-profit, civic and community groups are encouraged to have a booth on the street during this event. Carbon County Recreation – will have its climbing wall available Saturday, August 21st at the Helper Arts Festival from 10am-1pm. This activity is free to the public. There will also be a climbing competition that will begin at 1pm. This activity will cost five dollars per participant and there will be prizes for winners in each division.
ATV Designated Maps – are now available from Helper Police Department. Maps can be picked up at 97 South Main, Helper. Pick up between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Entertainers Wanted – The Helper Arts Festival is looking for local entertainers to perform on the Main Street Stage on Saturday, August 21. Block C on Wood Hill – The Carbon Class of 1954 is planning it’s 50th Class Reunion on August 21. Is there anyone out there who has the pride and equipment to paint the Block “C” or “Cs” on Wood Hill? Mayor Joe Piccolo has said the City will pay for the paint, but does not have the needed equipment to accomplish the task. It would, certainly, improve the looks of Wood Hill and would mean a lot to many people, local residents and out of town visitors, let alone reflect the pride we have in our community. 2004 We the People Bookshelf – National Endowment for the Humanities has selected Helper City Library to receive the 2004 “We the People Bookshelf” consisting of 15 books. These classic books, all of which reflect the theme of “Courage”, will engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers. The library staff encourages children of all ages to visit the library and read these wonderful classics.
Volunteers Wanted – The Helper Arts Festival is looking for volunteers to join in the fun of the festival. Plein Air Competition – Artists! Join artists from across the country in the 4th annual Plein Air Competition held in conjunction with the Helper Arts Festival. Writers Competition – Writers of short stories and poetry, plan now to join in the 1st annual Literary Fest competition, held in conjunction with the Helper Arts Festival. Competition dates are August 19-20, with prizes awarded on the 22nd. August 21 will be a day celebrating the written word, with Salt Lake Tribune columnist Robert Kirby starting us off and the top 5 entrants reading their work in the historic Rio Theater. Educational Opportunity Center – CEU has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice as well as assist students with a variety of services including financial aid application, college course selection and completing their GED if needed. The service is free and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium or in the Library in the Auditorium. This committee has been formed by Volunteers to acquire a new Helper City Community Pool.
Free Legal Clinic – In cooperation with the Seventh District Court, Utah Legal Services is holding a Free Legal Clinic on the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Seventh District Courthouse located at 149 East 100 South in Price. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Frontier Project – A local Family Support Group, Frontier Family F.U.T.U.R.E.S. meets every third Thursday in Carbon County. This is an organized parent education and support group. Anyone interested is invited to participate. Meetings begin at 7:00 at the Castle Valley Center, 755 North Cedar Hills Dr. in Price. Childcare and refreshments are available. Foster Grandparents – Volunteers of America-Utah needs grandparents to join the Foster Grandparent Program team. Foster Grandparents receive a modest non-taxable stipend of about $200 per month. Individuals who are at least 60 years old; love children; have a limited income, and extra time to share may qualify. FGP volunteers serve 20 hours per week in local schools, and receive a daily meal, a yearly physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty, and transportation to and from the school. Parenting for teens – The Family Support and Children’s Justice Center in Price offers a free class dealing with the issues, problems and difficulties facing teen parents. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Star Gazing – August 20th at 8:30 p.m. or dark. Energy Loop, Huntington Canyon Scenic Byway at the Huntington Reservoir parking lot near the top of the canyon. Guest speakers will be Professor Don Burge and Professor Mark Bunnell. This event is free, bring a jacket, chair and flashlight. Binoculars or telescope helpful, but not required.

DAV Mobile Service Office – Are you a veteran who feels confused about benefits and services you have earned? That’s why the non-profit DAV offers help. The DAV Mobile Service Office will be at Department of Workforce Services, 475 West Price River Drive, #256, on August 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to personally provide the best counseling and claim filing assistance available. The help is free to all veterans and their families.
Veteran Information and Benefit Fair – Hosted by Utah Division of Veteran’s Affairs on August 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Department of Workforce Services, 475 W. Price River Drive, #256 in Price. Representatives will be on hand to provide veterans with information on both State and Federal veteran benefits, medical benefits, and filing of VA claims.
VFW Field Service Officer Visit – On September 16, a Field Service Officer from the VFW Department Service Office in Salt Lake City will be visiting Price to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to qualify for assistance. The officer will be working out of the Price Workforce Services Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Please bring the following documents so that we may better serve you: DD form 214, marriage/divorce papers, birth/adoption/death certificates, children’s social security numbers.
