Four-year-old Makenna Jennings bravely gets an immunization at the Southeastern Utah Health District office in Price.
Jennings is at the optimal age to receive shots in preparation for the upcoming kindergarten enrollment.
By kindergarten, Castle Valley children should have five diptheria, tentanus and pertussis (DTP) shots; four polio and two measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunizations; three hepatitis, two hepatitis A and one varicella vaccination or history of chicken pox.
Although unique cases can get religious, medical or personal exemptions, most students cannot enroll for kindergarten without the required shots. For youth who receive exemptions, an outbreak could lead to the child being required to miss school for an extended time.
For more information, contact the health district at 637-3671.
