Results from this year’s Utah Basic Skills Competency Test (UBSCT) are in and show 75 percent of Carbon School District sophomores passed all three sections on their first try.
UBSCT is comprised of three tests: math, reading and writing. Students must pass all three sections to be eligible to earn a high school diploma. Students will have five chances between their sophomore and senior years to pass the tests.
Once any section is passed, a student need not retest on that section. Students who do not pass all three sections by their senior year and are not exempted because of special education status, will earn a certificate of completion rather than a high school diploma.
Carbon District scores on individual sections of the test, 65 percents of 290 students passed the math test compared to 67 percent statewide. In writing, 73 percent of 293 students passed compared to 72.3 percent statewide. Finally, on reading, 87 percent of 294 students passed, compared to 82.8 percent statewide.
Carbon District and the individual school scores are posted on the Utah State Office of Education website, www.usoe.org. along with state results. Individual student scores are not posted on the web.
