Sylvia Radley
PRICE – Sylvia Ann “Stacy” Radley, age 74, passed away March 31, 2004 at her home.
Born Aug. 11, 1929 in Pontiac, Mich. to Judd Jerome and Emma May Gunther Robbins. Married Keith “C” Radley Sr. D.D.S., May 17, 1951 in Elko, Nev. He died Feb. 28, 1975.
Sylvia “Stacy” was someone who loved life and tried to enjoy all it had to offer. Stacy flew through the skies as an airline stewardess until her wings were ‘clipped’ upon her marrying. She had much life experience serving many roles in the medical, legal, advertising and clothing industries. She found laughter in all things. An accomplished pianist, having graduated from Stephens College with an associates degree in music, her children grew up surrounded by the sound of her playing. She had high aspirations and was a very strong political activist. She was a champion of causes and a fighter for the underdog having retired from the Equal Opportunity Office at the University of Utah. She was a dedicated mother having raised six children and having sacrificed many of her own goals to do so as a single mother for many of those years. Stacy loved reading, writing and listening to anyone who needed a shoulder to cry on. She had a flair for style and appreciated the finer things in life. She had a great sense of humor and when her final days were done, Stacy would have looked back at her life and said “now wasn’t that a kick in the kimono.”
Survived by four sons and two daughters, Keith “C” Radley Jr. (Janine), Sandy; Elizabeth A. Box (Ken), Sweet Springs, Mich.; Kirk “C” Radley and Scott Buckley, Portland, Ore.; John Robbins Radley (Gabi), Romania; Victoria Pearson-Buckmiller (Brad), Venice, Fla.; Robbins Andrew Radley (Karen), Price; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband; son, James Jerome Radley; grandson, Ryan Lane Pearson; and granddaughter, Tara Lynn Radley.
Funeral service Thursday, April 8, 8 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday evening one hour prior to service. Graveside service Friday, noon, Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South, Sandy.
Betty Scartezina
PRICE – Betty Jane Williams Scartezina, age 79, passed away March 31, 2004 in Price.
The loving daughter of Frank Hein Sr. and Frances Katherine Ruthig was born on June 22, 1924 in San Diego, Calif. She married Rudolph “Rudy” Scartezina June 27, 1942 in San Diego, Calif.
Member of the Catholic Church and longtime resident of Carbon County. Betty was a loving housewife and mother, whose greatest enjoyment was caring and cooking for her family.
She is survived by husband, Rudy Scartezina; son, Dennis Scartezina, both of Price; sister, Gerry (Sam) Gilbert, San Diego, Calif.; brother, Frank (Tina) Hein, Coos Bay, Ore.; and three loving grandchildren, Jodi, Edward and Amber. Preceded in death by parents; son, Joseph “Joe” Scartezina; and brother, Roger Williams.
Betty’s family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone at Castle Country Care Center for their many acts of kindness shown to our family during the past two years.
Funeral service was Monday, April 5. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.
Jenavee Holton
EAST CARBON – Mary Ann Jenavee Stevenson Holton, age 88, passed away March 31, 2004 at the Castle Country Care Center.
Born June 1, 1915 in Sunnyside, to Daniel and Martha Curtis Stevenson. Married David Leonard Holton Sept. 7, 1942 in Evanston, Wyo. He died July 21, 1972.
Jenavee was a member of the LDS Church and she loved working on genealogy over the years. Graduate of Quish Beauty College.
Survived by daughter, Patsy (Joseph) Murphy, Fallon, Nev.; three grandchildren, Robert (Jeannie) Murphy, Phoenix, Ariz.; Kenneth (Kimberly) Murphy, Tucson, Ariz.; Susan (John) Marcum, Fallon, Nev.; eight great-grandchildren, B.J., Amber, Johnathan, Meredith, Mariah, Michael, Crystal, Lee; and brother, Melvin (Sylvia) Stevenson, East Carbon. Preceded in death by parents; two sisters, Ruth and Myrleen; and three brothers, Keith, Daniel and Leon.
Graveside service Tuesday, April 6, 1 p.m., Price City Cemetery. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Tuesday one hour prior to service.
Pauline McGrath
HELPER/BEAVER – Pauline Needles McGrath passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004 in Beaver.
Pauline was born July 30, 1942 in Vernal, to Charles Burton and Iowa Steele Needles. Married Marino Vomvas, later divorced. Married Glenn McGrath in October 1970 in Las Vegas, Nev.
She grew up with her family in Helper and graduated from Carbon High. After her graduation, she dedicated herself to her family and her work. She worked hard and was a very valued employee in many different administration positions. While working in Las Vegas, Nev. she met the love of her life, Glen McGrath. The love they shared is carried on today in her son, Pete Vomvas.
After they both retired, they spent several years traveling the nation in their motor home before settling in Beaver. Polly was a wonderful cook and had many friends wherever she lived. The only thing better than her cooking was her wonderful smile and her infectious laugh. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by husband, Glenn, Beaver; son, Pete Vomvas, Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers and sisters, Burton Needles, West Jordan; Bonnie Weaver, St. George; Connie Houskeeper, West Jordan; Jesse Needles, Price; Charlene Burnham, Scofield; Floyd Needles, Palm Springs, Calif.; as well as many other extended family members. Preceded in death by parents.
A memorial service will be held for family and close friends on Saturday, April 10, 2 p.m., in Beaver.
Leland Thomas
SCOFIELD – Leland Jack Thomas, “Uncle Jack” died April 3, 2004 in Sandy.
Jack was born to Leland Stanford and Mary Ann Donaldson Thomas on May 25, 1913 in Scofield.
He married Clara Muir in May of 1976 and cared for her until her death. Jack then married Lida Tippetts in August of 1994. They remained sweethearts until her death in January of 2003. Jack did not have any children, but was a profoundly positive influence in the lives of his adoring nieces and nephews.
He received his public education in Scofield and Price. He attended Brigham Young University where he studied engineering and wrestled on the University’s winning team.
Jack was employed by Carbon County coal mining companies for several years before leaving to pursue his passion – raising, showing, and racing championship quarter horses. He had ranches in Scofield and Preston, Idaho.
Jack was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He valued formal ties to his faith later in life, but exemplified from his early childhood the virtues extolled by prophets through the ages. He was always honest, obedient, helpful, charitable, full of hope, and hard working. In short, Jack was an honorable man in every circumstance.
Alzheimer’s defeated his independence, but could never conquer his dignity or warm humor. Jack’s family expresses their appreciation to the staff of the Alta Ridge Alzheimer’s Assisted Living Center in Sandy for their dedicated care of Jack.
Jack is survived by his devoted sister, Betty Thomas Glade, and a beloved sister-in-law, Pauline Van Alfen Thomas. He is survived by loving nieces and nephews, Sue Glade Broadbent, Kenneth Glade, Scot Thomas, LeeAnn Glade, Thomas North, Cindy Thomas Wheeler, Velma Lisa Glade Leftwich, Karen North Corbridge, Christie North Stuart, and James Glade; and their admiring children and grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by parents; wives; brothers, William Thomas and Joseph Earl Thomas; and sister, Josephine Thomas North. He was also preceded in death by a much loved nephew, Lee Thomas; and brother-in-law, K. Preston Glade.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 10, 11 a.m., at the Berg Mortuary Drawing Room Chapel, 185 E. Center Street, Provo. A viewing will begin one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Primary Children’s Medical Center, 100 North Medical Dr., Salt Lake City, Utah 84113. Families similarly afflicted may donate blood to the Myriad Genetics Alzheimer’s Study, 320 South Wakura Way, Salt Lake City, (584-3600 or 1-800-469-7423).
