Paul E. Nicolaides
SUNSET – Paul E. Nicolaides returned home to his Father in Heaven and was reunited with his eternal companion on March 27, 2004.
He was born March 12, 1926, to Olva K. Nicolaides and Eva Wheeless Nicolaides, in Ogden. He was educated through the Ogden school system, leaving his senior year to join the Navy in 1944. He was sent to the Pacific island of Guam as an aircraft and radio mechanic. He was a member of the Carrier Air Support Union 12. Their unit repaired more airplanes and got them in the air faster than any other unit. The government said it was only possible to do 80 or so a week, they were able to triple that amount.
Returning home after the war, he met Ellen Jean Eilander and they were married on June 18, 1947. The marriage was later solemnized in the Switzerland Temple. A son and daughter were born of this union.
In the early 1950s he re-entered military life, this time joining the Air Force. He was stationed in Germany, Minnesota, New Mexico and in Utah during his enlistment. He retired in 1969, after serving through the Korean War and into the Vietnam Conflict, bringing his family home to Utah. He went to work at Hill Air Force Base as a civilian in engine maintenance, retiring from there in 1991. His wife told him he needed something to do one or two days a week, just to keep out of her way, so back to Hill Field he went, volunteering his time at the base hospital pharmacy. He made life-long friends throughout his travels, corresponding through letters until he discovered e-mail. Then it was on the computer for an hour or two a day. He loved traveling, even if it was only for a few days at a time. He devoted his time to Ellen, taking care of her through the final stages of rheumatoid arthritis. She passed away on Dec. 11, 2001.
With Ellen gone, he was very lonely, even though his children and friends kept him busy and involved in activities, as much as possible. His wife’s sister, Beverly (Birdie) Marshall, who had been widowed for a few years, kept boosting his spirits with her upbeat, positive attitude. Soon their friendship turned to love and they were married on April 19, 2003. They loved going back and forth to Price and Sunset taking care of their homes.
He leaves behind his wife, Beverly; son, Stephen (Sharlene) Nicolaides; daughter Suzanne (Steven) Kemp; stepchildren, Jack (Gloria) Marshall, Sharon (Stewart) Jones, Larry (Cris) Marshall, Wendy (Pete) Cowley, and Melanie (Todd) Jones, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Forrest; sisters LaRue and Virginia and granddaughter, Andrea.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 30, 1 p.m., at the Sunset 1st LDS Ward, 2431 N. 250 West. Friends and family may call at Myers Mortuary in Roy on Tuesday from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the church. Interment Aultorest Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded. Katherine Bailey
GREEN RIVER/PRICE – Katherine Ann Mahon Bailey, age 72, passed away March 28, 2004 in a Price hospital.
Born April 2, 1931 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Frank and Esther Opperman Mahon, she was their only daughter. Married Robert Lee Bailey March 1, 1952 in Los Angeles, Calif. and they were only separated by his death in March of 2000. He was the love of her life and she never really fully recovered from his loss. From this union they had one son, Patrick F. Bailey, born in November of 1953 and one grandson, Sean R. Bailey.
Katherine was raised in the Catholic faith and would in her later life be a practitioner in the full gospel of Jesus Christ. She was the consummate of motherhood, supportive and inspirational even up to the last day of her life.
Katherine was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother sacrificing her wants and needs for that of her family’s. Beautiful in life both spiritually and physically you were the wind under our wings.
Survivors include her only son, Patrick; and wife, Betty Jean; grandson, Sean Bailey, all of Price. We love you Yah Yah now and forever.
A family graveside service will be in the Price City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Price Work Rite.
Jay Charles Lake
LAYTON – Our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Jay Charles Lake, age 85, returned to his Father in Heaven and his sweetheart, surrounded by his family, Saturday March 27, 2004.
Jay was born July 22, 1918 in Castle Dale, Utah, a son of Asa Robert and Clarissa Williams Lake. He was married to his sweetheart, Elma M. Cox, June 16, 1939 in Castle Dale, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on July 10, 1959.
Jay belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions throughout his life.
Jay served in the Army during WWII and he retired from Hill Air Force Base.
He loved his family and spending time with them was his greatest joy.
Jay is survived by his seven children Gaylene (Dale) Goede, Dee J. (Susan) Lake, Jack R. Lake, and Wendy (Greg) Fairless, all of Layton, UT; Julie (Craig) Page of Syracuse, UT; Darlene Lake of Liberty, UT; Karen (Mark) Mabson of California; twenty grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elma, his parents, and one grandson, Kevin Dale Goede.
Services will be held Thursday, April 1, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call Wednesday 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd, Ogden.

Eva Perla
CARBONVILLE – Our loving sister, aunt and friend to many, Eva “Teta” Perla, age 78, passed away March 26, 2004 in the arms of her loving niece Patty.
She was born Feb. 15, 1926 in Aspen, Colo. to John and Amelia Miljavac Perla.
Eva attended schools in Kenilworth, Notre Dame and later graduated from Carbon High School. She worked in the banking industry for many years prior to her retirement in 1981.
She is survived by sisters, Annie Peczuh and Rose Koran; sister-in-law, Merena Perla, all of Carbonville; and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Mary and Molly; brothers, John, Frank and Joe.
Funeral Mass Tuesday, March 30, 10 a.m., Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Friends are welcome daily at Mitchell Funeral Home. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.
